Veg*n's have the stereotype of being skinny and underweight. I know this not to be true for all veg*ns or even most of us. But I'd like to know what catagory the VBers here fall into. Be honest! And if anyone has a link to a study done about this, I'd appreciate it if you'd post it, TIA!

Cissy 03-02-2004 02:34 PM

I am underweight for reasons completely unrelated to being a vegetarian/vegan.

toadstool 03-02-2004 02:43 PM

Technically, I fall toward the low-end of what's considered "normal" for my height, so I chose "just right" in the poll.

But I'm small framed, and I tend to think I'm just a teeny tiny bit overweight.

SL1031 03-02-2004 04:00 PM

I am technically "just right for my age, height" but..I posted in "overweight" because I need to lose 15 more pounds.

If you use the bmi, then I'm just on the border between 'just right' and 'overweight'. I'm certainly not skinny anyway! I'm not sure about what frame I have, by one website I was small-framed, but I don't really believe that. I don't really know what other ways there are to judge weight except for the bmi, but that's not meant to be the be all and end all is it?

Ana 03-02-2004 04:31 PM

Don't take BMI's too seriously - your bone structure plays a part too. According to my BMI I am borderline overweight but am only barely back up to a weight where my doctor doesn't have a fit when she sees me (I want to only see your collarbones! Not every pair of ribs, too! Your arms look like sticks, girl - I want you to buy cake on the way home!")

So I ticked just right.

I'm about right. I weigh 11st. i have no idea what that is in pounds, but it's 70 kilos-ish I think that's 144lb by my (crap) estimates. I'm about 5'72 or so I'm told. i used one of those BMI index thingies taken from the health section of the daily express not so long ago to work that out.

Oatmeal 03-02-2004 06:16 PM

I am slightly underweight according to most older weight tables, my BMI is in the normal range however.

I voted "I am just right, thanks" though, because this is the weight I feel best at. I have been at many weight levels throughout my life, so I know what I am talking about from experience, and nobody can convince me that I "should" be at a different weight. Especially not books that also preach that meat and dairy are health foods.

ETA: I'm about 155-160 lbs @ 6'1".

chiaraluna 03-02-2004 06:17 PM

I'm right in the middle of my proper weight bracket. I'm totally okay with my weight, though I'd like to trim down a little bit.

AuroraLily 03-02-2004 06:28 PM

My weight is good for my short height (5'1!) but I'm trying to get in shape this summer and get toned!

raylea 03-02-2004 06:40 PM

I'm bordering on the lower side of normal (BMI of 20), but I would love to be in better physical shape

Christy 03-02-2004 07:18 PM

I'm in the middle of a healthy weight range (120 lbs) for my height (5'3") on most charts I've seen. I also have a healthy BMI (21, I think?). I am trying to get in shape and tone up, which may result in the loss of a few pounds. I may have lost a bit 2 years ago when I went veg, but it evened out as my body adjusted to the change.

Nicky 03-02-2004 09:22 PM

I'm in the normal weight range I think I could lose a little weight though, not heaps but maybe a little

rabid_child 03-02-2004 10:19 PM

I'm of a normal weight. I've always been this weight. Nothing seems to change it.

sandebs 03-03-2004 05:35 AM

I am obese but still continuing to work off the weight, vegetarian habits help tremendously.

Tommy Gun 03-03-2004 07:03 AM

My weight is "just right," but that's a bit misleading. That says nothing about muscle, and in that area I could definitely use some work. I sit on my computer all day, and really don't exercise (much).

GhostUser 03-03-2004 07:06 AM

165 @ 5 foot 9. before cutting out the "bad" carbs like white rice, white pasta & white breads, I was 195.

I'm a tad bit overwieght I guess. It seems that 155 is a normal weight for my height.

tuesday 03-03-2004 09:55 AM

I weigh 46 kilos and measure 5'1". I think I'm a bit too skinny.

1 stone = 14 lbs. 11 stone calculates to 154 lbs. For someone over 5ft, seems like this should fall into "just right" or "slightly underweight."

monkeyandbunny 03-03-2004 10:48 AM

Slightly overweight, I could stand to lose about 15-20 lbs. Yeah, I don't "look" like a vegetarian.

Tash 03-03-2004 11:48 AM

I became a vegan...Somewhere between then and now some 25 pounds have snuck up on me. I consider myself heavier than I'd like.I'm far from inactive. Better weather will make for more outdoor activities though. T.

austinswingrr 03-03-2004 11:54 AM

I checked "just right." I feel good and I seem to be pretty set at this weight (on a healthy diet and lots of exercise).

I am 5' 5" and around 120 lbs.

meatless 03-03-2004 11:55 AM

I say just right, although for vanity reasons I'd like to weight 5-10 pounds less. My BMI is in the 19-20 range, but I don't think I look underweight at all. I'm 5'7 125-130, and would like to be 120-125, but that's just cause I have a few items of clothing that will fit a lot better if I were a few pounds lighter. I am very inactive and hope to change that. I wear anything from size 3-9, depending on the brand, if it's a top/bottom etc.

kafkaesque 03-03-2004 01:51 PM

Complete myth about vegans being underweight! I have had to watch it since becoming vegan. The beans, salads, and veggies have had me completely stuffed. I have been so surprised at how good all the food tastes sans diary and egg and I get so full even staying away from a lot of bread and white rice! My weight is okay right now, but that may rapidly change if I don't start watching it.

SunshineDreamer 03-03-2004 03:20 PM

I'm 5'2" and I weigh about 94 or 95 lbs... I voted just right, but I'm not sure. Is that a little underweight or is it ok?

Methinks that's a little underweight. Your BMI is around 17.4, and supposedly you're supposed to be at least 18-20. I wouldn't worry about it though

SunshineDreamer 03-03-2004 04:00 PM

Oh! Thanks for the info!

bunnyfish79 03-03-2004 04:41 PM

I am a little underweight, I always used to be this skinny though, even when I was still omni. I mentioned this before somewhere..I gained about 6lbs after going vegetarian and another 5 lbs or so after going vegan.

Oh, I am 5,6 and about 100-105lbs....it fluctuates.

Epinephrine 03-03-2004 04:50 PM

my bmi is 19.5

bunnyfish79 03-03-2004 05:05 PM

Oh, maybe I should have just listed my BMI, I have no clue what it is...lol...probably 17 or 18 something. Hmmm
