years ago i had a dish at uni that had fake crab meat in it. i remember it tasting weird and making me sick. does that stuff taste like the real thing? is there any product that replicates sea creatures appropriately? i've never had crab or anything.

i guess it doesn't really matter in the end but i've always wondered.

Fake crab is usually just another kind of fish (don't remember off the top of my head) seasoned to taste like crab.

I'm sure there are veggie crab imitations out there but I've never had it.

I recently posted a thread about one vegan crab substitute I found. I haven't tried it yet, though, I've been busy this week. I'll report back when I get around to it.

don't take my life away, don't take my life away.

I've seen vegan "crab" at asian markets.

The standard fake crab is usually Pollack, a cold water white fish.

no, it doesn't taste like crab. I ate it once... before I found out that you throw them into the pan alive.

that said, my mom keeps referring to imitation crab meat as sashimi, whatever that is. I know it's some kind of whitefish that it's made out of, but I always kind of assumed it was a mixture of fishies and not just one kind.

Sashimi: A type of sushi consisting of only the thin slices of raw fish; Of or pertaining to the type of sushi served without sticky white rice

So fake crab meat isn't sashimi.

I don't get why they would make fake crab out of fish? If they are going to eat fish that tastes like crab then why not just eat crab?

eww gross. but, that would probably make sense although they were always really good about veggie options there (i even saw them cleaning the grill for veggie burgers) and i stopped the 20 questions after a few month. in any case, it would explain why i got sick and why it was the only thing ever i ate there that was gross.

Sashimi is a type of sushi. The word she is looking for is SURIMI. Surimi basically just means "fish paste" and is a ground up slurry of fish bits that is formed, flavored, and cooked. It can be made of one kind of fish, or many. I saw something on tv about how it was made, it was really gross.

Yyyeah. The fake crab they use in california rolls is made from fish. That was the only big mistake I made when I first went vegetarian, on like my second day. I was like EFFFFFFFFFFF.

You're gonna make me puke my pants.

My asian store has tons of vegan fish substitutes. They all look horrifyingly real though so I've never tried them. The fake crawdads (crayfish?) have eyes.

Veggieworld in the UK sells fake crab meat. I've never tried real crab and have no intention of trying fake.
