Isn't that good news?

Someone offered me some BBQ chicken today at work and when I told her "No thanks, I'm a vegetarian" she told me that I didn't look like a vegetarian. I didn't know how to respond, so I didn't.

I do wish I had a snappy one-liner for that statement.

I'd say "Oh really, what do vegetarians look like?"

I suppose people think all vegetarians are either are hippies or frail, pale sickly weaklings or something.

I'm with "and vegetarians look like ...?" as well.

I rarely get anything other than 'of course ...' when people find out I'm a vegetarian. Guess I have the look, whatever that is. The whole granola hippy thing.

I don't get it so much now, but in my teens & 20's people always said they were amazed at how healthy I looked

I've only been vegetarian since Feb/March, but I've had people think I'm a vegetarian my whole life. As in people have thought they'd need to prepare special meals for me when I went round their homes etc.

So I guess vegetarians must look like me.

I think most people figure it out for me. Not sure how. Maybe my yoga/athletic/runners body or face color. And they see me carrying green mixtures a lot.

I've had one of my tables go: "Oh, you look so healthy!"

I'm like, "Er, thanks???"

Am I supposed to look ill?

I actually get that a lot too. People expect vegetarians to all be very skinny. I'm somewhat larger than the typical stereotype (a.k.a normal).

What's weird is I've heard the complete opposite too. I've had people tell me every vegetarian they knew was overweight.

I've been told many times by people that I look like a vegetarian. Maybe because I'm so fair. I'm a vampire.

You never know!!! To be fair, I was light before becoming a vegetarian, so I got a head start. I think it's funny when people say a person looks "pale" because of their diet when that's just their skintone. It's happened to me before. I'm healthier than just about everyone I've ever met too. People are just ignorant.

I know. I have always been very pale even when I was a meat-eater.

Ditto. It's funny to hear that from family too, they've known me for 23 years!!! I don't think I could get any whiter even if I was "pale" I avoid the sun like the plague, too much skin cancer in my family.
