The constituency of Texas 22 nd Congressional district has been surrounded with controversies in the recent times. Texas 22 nd Congressional District covers a south-central portion of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. It includes the cities of Rosenberg and La Marque as well as portions of Missouri City and Pearland, in Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties. The previous elections showed the constituency conducting two elections on the same day. There was a Special Election and a General Election.

The Special Election was held to fill in the seat vacated by Tom DeLay, the House Majority Republican leader who represented Texas 22 nd for the past 20 years. The leader resigned after allegations of corruption before completing his term. This led to the upholding of the Special elections to fill in the seat vacated by him till the expiry of his term. The special election was won by a write-in candidate Shelley Sekula-Gibbs. Even though the primary elections were won by Tom DeLay, he refused to contest in the following General Elections.

In the following general election there were three main candidates: Democrat and former US Representative Nick Lampson, Libertarian Party candidate Bob Smither, and Republican Sekula-Gibbs. Only Lampson's and Smither's names appeared on the ballot, as Shelley Sekula-Gibbs had to run as a write-in candidate. In this race, Lampson captured 52% of the vote, to Sekula-Gibbs' 42%, and Smither collected 6%. The last year elections in Texas 22nd Congressional district saw a mix of candidates and non-candidates. There were Democrats, Republican write-ins, Libertarians and independents. This year, Lampson is standing for a re-election. Along with Lampson, there are many known names standing for election. This includes former Sugar Land mayor Dean Hrbacek, former Pasadena mayor John Manlove, former John Cornyn Chief of Staff Pete Olson, Family District Judge Jim Squier, State Representative Bob Talton, and NASA contractor Ryan Rowley.
