I am curious about the banned thing. I know that there are certain things that cannot be said or done on boards, but what do most people do to get banned? I have seen users with the label and have checked back at their messages because of curiousity to what they have done, but I can't always find something. So my main question... what are the main reasons that get people banned?

FYI haha I am not trying to get myself banned or anything. Really just curiousity.

Iria 07-24-2008 09:26 PM

I'm not a mod or anything, but sometimes when people post something really inflammatory (usually a personal attack), the mods delete that comment when they ban the person.

Also, some people request to be banned permanently or temporarily so they have less distractions from real-life duties.

MyrtleXeiba 07-24-2008 09:31 PM

Ahhh I never thought of anyone being asked to be banned. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

synergy 07-24-2008 09:33 PM

Also, if someone has broken the board rules, the posts will be deleted, so you won't see anything in their post history.

Bof 07-24-2008 09:43 PM

And you can also be punished on spurious grounds by biased mods.

Or they may just make you do 'Hail Mary's'

Indeed. I got a warning for jokingly posting "please don't breed" after someone asked the question, "what do have to do if I want to flip a car?" I got another warning for calling someone a "twit."

On the other hand, a mod once called me an "ass" because she disagreed with my position on something. That post wasn't deleted, I doubt she got a warning, and she's still a mod.

But the use of 'slut' is fine.

(twit - noun. Informal, chiefly British a silly or foolish person. - OED)

Just a quick note for those who don't know, or who sometimes forget:

We mods are volunteers who basically just try to enforce the board rules created by Michael as best we can.

There will be inconsistency, because we are all very different people. We do all have jobs and busy lives. We try to bounce things off of each other, but we are not always in agreement with actions to take- we are imperfect beings, just trying to make VB a great place to hang out.

FWIW, I think most of us understand that.

Yeah, there is definitely a double standard - that's been all too obvious for a long while; ultimately it's Michael's board to run as he wants.

I take a break when things get too biased/ridiculous and come back when the air has cleared. Consider it a weird compliment, many of the people they "hand-slap" for no "real" reason are the truly interesting/articulate/intelligent people on the board.

Like me.

Vanity, vanity, all is vanity.

#1 There is no "double standard". The mods however are not androids, and of course cannot be 100% objective. Also, there are rarely two situations that are the same.

#2 This statement about the "truly interesting...." people suggests that you wouldn't mind if the "hand slapping" (won't even go there) were done to non interesting people. Talk about a double standard.

<<takes it personally when "the mods are so biased" threads emerge.

I took this to mean that she's of the opinion that the posts of some of the more outspoken members who speak interestingly on heated issues are reviewed with more scrutiny than others, at least when it comes to some mods.

A good example of how the blind eye can be cast is this: https://www.veggieboards.com/boards/s...ad.php?t=79500, where one member framed another in a pejorative fashion - in the thread title! If certain other members had done the same it would have been a scandal.

In the end it was shut down "because VB/moderators don't wish to encourage people to ambush another board" - never addressing the "personal attack" on Vegan Joe at all.

Well, that might give you an inkling of what it feels like to be accused, found guilty and punished for something you haven't done.

Maybe, if some of the mods weren't so partial, there wouldn't be any threads complaining about them.

Kiz 07-25-2008 02:33 AM

You never know. I've been given official warnings because I praised Firefox and it's supported add-ons. On the other hand I'm way more abrasive than some people that get banned so go figure.

I wish there was a way to know why someone was banned, whether they jumped themselves or were pushed and why, but I understand the reasons why the reasons for bannings are kept private. I'm just a big ole sticky beak.

Pig's arse! You're a pussycat!

Kiz 07-25-2008 02:42 AM

That is true. But sometimes some fairly nice people seem to get banned so it puzzles me. And isn't calling someone a pussy a breach of the TOS? (Direct insult and all... y'know)

At least I didn't call you a slut!

pussycat noun (informal)

1 a cat.

2 a mild-mannered or easy-going person.

Kiz 07-25-2008 02:52 AM

While I despise the word slut I would still rather be a slut than a pussy.

Is that referencing members calling each other sluts or are you talking about the Slut thread?

Skylark 07-25-2008 11:33 AM

I've been on lots of boards, and at every single one, there's a certain contingent that will complain about the mods/admin no matter how fair and even-handed they are. It seems some people absolutely dislike the entire concept of moderation. There are boards for them. And some of you already go there.

Sevenseas 07-25-2008 12:55 PM

Tom Cruise joined VB a month or so after I had joined, but he was banned after four days for violating the "Don't be a manic dangerous Hollywood freak who has a lot of money but should definitely use it to get some help" rule of an older version of the TOS.

Hm, that's not the attitude I've come to expect from someone who's achieved a proper state of clear.

Such innocence; idealists are so cute, sometimes.
