I've been giving a lot of thought to how we can improve VeggieBoards - not so much the site itself but our sense of community. We have so much potential and as a whole I just don't think we're living up to it.
I have some amazing ideas, some my own and some contributed by others. Over the next few months I'll be addressing most of the major concerns people have with VB
. Good or bad, I welcome your opinions but some of you may be disappointed with the direction in which we're heading. I've put this off too long and it's time I do what's best for the community.
I know several of you feel it's pointless to "complain" about anything around here. You may think I don't care or that I won't do anything about it. The first is far from the truth. I do care. The second is more accurate. In a nutshell, it's easier to avoid the problem and hope it goes away than it is to do something about it. I know that's something I need to work on. And that's the point of all this.
Right now I'm in the planning stages. Over the weekend I will be compiling a list of "complaints" that I've read both here and on other sites. I'll sort them by priority and come up with a plan to address each.
I will also be writing a mission statement that will outline the core values of our community - what we stand for and why we're here. My goal is to bring us closer together by providing a more friendly/supportive atmosphere. At the same time I would like to reduce the amount of moderation that needs to take place. That's where our mission statement comes in. By posting here you will be asked to abide by a very reasonable set of values. The focus will turn from enforcing rules to ensuring that our core values are supported. If you (or we) decide you are unable to support those core values then it may be best for you to post somewhere else.
Until then I want you to know that we are all responsible for bettering VB
. Your posts are what make up this community and I'd like to ask that each of you put forth a little extra effort in making quality posts that are respectful of others.
Also, over the next week or so I'll be contacting some of you privately to see if you have any concerns or suggestions. You're also more than welcome to pm me. All of these decisions will be based on what I think is best for the community so this is the time to make your thoughts known.
Like I said, it's not all doom and gloom. I just feel we're at a crossroads and that this is the time to make some critical decisions about which way we want to go.
