This holiday season I thought we'd adopt an animal from Farm Sanctuary. I'm willing to match VB member contributions up to a combined total of $300.

Basically if the members come up with $300 and I match $300 then we'll be able to contribute $600 toFarm Sanctuary's Adopt a Farm Animal Project.

I would like to adopt one animal (as opposed to adopting multiple "lower cost" animals) because that would reduce Farm Sanctuary's costs for preparing and sending out adoption packets. The type of animal we adopt would depend on how much we come up with. Here are the annual costs for each type of animal...

Cow: $600

Pig: $420

Sheep: $300

Goat: $300

Turkey: $180

Duck: $180

Goose: $180

Rabbit: $120

Chicken: $120

If we raise more than $600 and have enough for another animal then we will adopt another animal. If we raise more than $600 and there isn't enough for another animal then the remainder will simply be a contribution to Farm Sanctuary.

I would prefer PayPal, my account is under [email protected]. Put "Farm Sanctuary" in the memo field so that I know what it's for. If you would like to send a check or money order that's fine too, just pm me for the address.

All donations will remain anonymous. To ensure that all donations are accounted for I will post the PayPal transaction ID or check number along with the amount.

The deadline is December 15th. If you have questions or comments please post here.

Donations to date:

$10 ID #9SG13546VR528503H

$10 match

$10 ID #53H721574E019234A

Yay! (wait, that's the wrong thread....)

I'm in. Should we send $ via Paypal?

All I can say is that I've got to get into the farm sanctuary business.

For the larger animals it works out to about three times the annual cost to keep them as does what it costs me. A man could make a good living with a farm sanctuary.

I'm sure they have overhead that you do not. Plus, they go out of their way to rescue animals from terrible conditions. I'm sure that can get expensive.

ETA: This rescue, for one example, along with treatment and aftercare, it pretty expensive.

I agree they are definitely not in it to make money. They are non-profit. They are solely funded by the contributions of people. It is a lot of work. I believe the Farm Sanctuary also has a location in California.

I have recently adopted a cow at an Animal Sanctuary here in Maryland, Poplar Spring but I am willing to contribute!

I'll paypal a donation over when I get paid again. ^_^

We see the world as "we" are, not as "it" is; because it is the "I" behind the "eye" that does the seeing.

In addition to the facts stated previously I doubt your figures are accurate. Three times as much as it costs to keep a cow? My dog's food costs me 25.00 a month. That's just food. That doesn't include vet care. Grooming. Toys. Plus the house with the larger yard we bought so the dog would have a place to run.

Three times as much as it costs if you treat your cows like crap maybe.

They also produce literature for activism to help people learn about where are "food" comes from.

Edited to add - My daughter and I will PayPal a donation when my hubby gets paid again!

yeah, my rabbits cost more than $100/month right now. and we've paid over $2000 in one month just in vet bills.

Well with my match and the contributions others have made we have enough for a full cow!

No reason we can't go for another one!

Thank you John, that was very generous! And thank you to everyone else who has contributed, and to those that would like to but can't for whatever reason.

I just sent a donation over, Michael.
