I asked this question in the locked thread, but got no answer.

If someone is banned, is there a was for ordinary members to be able to see that?

I haven't seen the word 'banned' in anyone's profile section of their post...maybe I missed that?

I discovered this last night: Nope, only mods can see people are banned now. I always thought everyone could see, but I was wrong.

Wow.  Perhaps that can be changed.  I think everyone needs to see when someone is banned.  Especially since most of our bans are temporary self-bans.

Hmmm, that a bug if it's not happening.  Can you send me a link?  When a member gets banned, we usually add the BANNED badge to their postbit.  Did you logout and not see the BANNED link?

Yeah, if I go in incognito mode and check, anyone that has been banned doesn't have that under their name.

For example:

If it could be changed, it would also be good to have additional categories, like 'suspended', and 'voluntary suspension' .

perhaps someone could explain this self banning...why would someone ban themselves rather than just stop posting? and how does one ban oneself?

Some people don't have the restraint. tongue3.gif And they just PM a mod and the mod'll do it.

I think so, yes.

It's more dramatic that way tongue3.gif  Though it doesn't really work now that no one can see it.

Correction: I just checked it out, and it looks like it's only all the posts by a user in a thread. I'm still trying to figure out this software.

Yeah, I think it can come in handy with troll threads, and maybe spammers if they decide to post several times in a thread (rare, but I've seen it happen a couple times). Or to move the posts into a new thread I guess. I dunno.

I should probably stop saying things without actually verifying what I'm saying first. lipsrsealed2.gif

Does the new software not allow for the courtesy of telling a banned member what they were banned for?

At the moment, it doesn't, and I hope that changes.  This change caught us (the moderators) by surprise as we were used to sending a message along with the ban.

In the past I've self-banned as a way to switch to using a new username.  So I'm sure that's something someone else has done in the past.

If I was cynical, I would think that the reason that the software doesn't show that banned people are banned, for non-mods, was because it would make the forum seem less harmonious, and that wouldn't be good for business.

Or if I was even more cynical, I would think that it is a form of control. People get banned, but nobody even knows that they are banned, they just stop posting......there is no banned log that people can see, and people wonder what they can post without getting banned.....

bit sinister, that.

Or people could...

A) Post they're requesting a temporary ban.
B) Not do anything to get themselves banned.

I've never been banned from a message board. It's really not that hard for most people.

I understand im new but who cares and why would you care if someone was banned just Follow the TOS and your fine.If its someone you simply care about or are close with then i would assume you wold have there email or some means to connect with them.Over the course of years i have made some great friends online and i we have always at least exchanged email address in case the site went down and never reopened,

I just think it is better if there is transparency.
What's the big deal? Someone gets banned, then it should shows that they are banned.

I don't like that someone can be banned and not realize it. Or that they will not be shown a reason. The old software had a place for mods to enter the reason. When the user tried to log in, a screen would pop up that said you have been banned until X because of X. I also agree that it is preferable to show everyone whether an account has been banned.

Agreed.

Other software issues and concerns that have not been answered yet:

Why can't our accounts be deleted when we request it? Why can't our pm's be completely deleted as well? I'm not understanding why when we delete a pm it goes straight to the trash folder where it will stay until we send/receive another 20 messages to fill it up again. Why can't the trash folder be emptied???
