can i get rid of those ads that spring up every time i log in on here?

Im seeing ads for Celtic beef, diet aids, bupa, protein powders and all kinds of stuff im sure is hardly vegetarian related. How come they can advertise here?

michael (who owns the board) uses revenue from the ads to offset the cost of running the server that hosts veggieboards. google picks the ads, and they tend to be changed by the content of a thread (if everyone starts talking about beer, beer ads show up). michael can remove a few ads, but prefers to keep it to the really dreadful ones cos there is a limit to how many he can block. generally the suggestion is that you purchase a contributing member status, as members who donate to the site don't see ads, but i'm not sure if thats working since our most recent upgrade.

They are Google ads, which means that Google uses the context of this site to pull ads from a database. Michael is not choosing the ads, Google is. I assume you seeing those ads because there are discussions of that nature going on on this site and Google is just picking up keywords.

Hope that helps.

Morvenna, if you see something overtly non-veg (like the beef ad you mentioned), please post about it or PM Michael. He gets rids of the worst offenders. He's said before too, that a screen shot is helpful.

Morvenna, I'm sorry we were just being silly Moderators and Contributing Members don't see *any* ads. I logged out and used a dummy account to browse the boards for a bit, but didn't come across the meaty ad you mentioned. It's somewhat random though. Are you able to take screen shots? I'm not sure why that's helpful, but it's something Michael's requested in the past.

Different people see different ads (and Contributing Members don't see any ads). Some are probably not appropriate for this site. You can view this post in the FAQ thread for a full explanation...
