My ear keeps getting plugged up

Thread Starter
OK, this is kinda gross, just as a warning. My left ear (the ear I sleep on every night) keeps getting plugged up with ear wax. This has happened before, about every 6 months it gets this way.

I don't use Q-tips because it says right on the box not to stick them in your ears! However I've gone to the doctor to get my ears irrigated, and he says it's fine to use them in that way. So who should I listen to...the doctor (who isn't a specialist in ears/nose/throat BTW...can't think of the term for them) or the product box?

Also, any suggestions on how to get my ear unplugged now that it's plugged up? I've tried the ear drops that are made for swimmer's ear. And I've used the Q-tips, which did get some wax out, but obviously not enough since it's still plugged up. I'm afraid I made it worse by shoving the wax deeper w/the Q-tip

the producers are just playing it safe, not wanting to get sued.

I would follow the doctor's advice.

I use cotton buds all the time myself.

Do you sit near a fan often? My colleague at work has a fan on his desk that blows past his right ear. And every few months that ear gets plugged up with wax. The other one doesn't get plugged up, so he's sure it's the fan that causes it. Maybe something similar is causing a build-up in your left ear?

I've found that Q-tips don't really work on wax very well. They only get the wax in your outer ear canal, and that's not where the clogging happens. Also, the cotton in the Q-tips unravels when it sticks to the wax! Gross! Though when I lived on the West coast of Canada, I shopped at Safeway supermarkets and bought their own brand of cotton swabs. And they did a MUCH better job of not falling apart when I put them in my ear. If you have a Safeway store near you, that might be something to try.

for some reason oil breaks up ear wax, put a dab of baby oil on the q-tip.

I was told by my doctor not to poke Q tips into your ear, only put into the ear as far as your little finger would go.If you put things in your ear it could push the wax further in plugging your ears even more.A drop of olive oil for a couple of nights will loosen the wax and flush it out(you may find your hearing is not normal at first but once its flushed out it will be better)

Is ear candling safe? I heard people say it works, that it's horrible, and that it does nothing.

Some say it hurts and some say it's a soothing warm feeling.

I'd never do it I don't think, but my ears don't get plugged up so I'm not sure how far I'd go if they were...

I do use q-tips though

There's really no consensus on this issue (as you can see). I'd go with your doctors advice, I use q-tips like mad since I can't stand seeing people with wax in their ears and I hate the feeling.

I'm a wax-a-phobic too. I love q-tips.

I've also heard that they can push wax in deeper by a doctor. He said you were supposed to use a wet washcloth to wash the wax out while in a shower.

I used to get that a lot too (I've always had ear problems). What I used to do: is buy a syringe, fill it with lukewarm water( DO NOT USE HOT WATER), put a little Tupperware dish under your ear, and flush it out. I usually ended up having my mom do it, or somebody else (it's easier than doing it yourself). It might hurt/feel weird at first, but it's nice once you get the wax out.
Did you write the book of love, and do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock Ân roll,
Can music save your mortal soul, And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

I have a small hearing loss in my left ear...and have always had issues with my left ear and it gets waxx in it big time all the time and I get the worst ear-aches and I agree about the Safeway Q-tips they are the best if you are using Q-tips and I dont use them often cause my Doc doesnt reccomend it...but hey I am a rebel and do it anyways and they really work.

I speak from experience i often get blocked ears and have pushed the wax so far down its blocked them.Olive oil will do the treat if its lodge deep within the ear canel or a wash cloth will wash the outer part just fine

This is more a suggestion for prevention rather than cure. I always used to have problems with blocked ears. (Seems to be a family trait.) Now I never do because I use q-tips to dry out my ears after every shower (in spite of warnings to not do so). If I don't complete dry out my ears, they seem to get irritated and over-produce wax. Also, for some reason, water in my ears is a real pain when flying.

if you put a q-tip into your ear you're right, you are just gonna shove the wax in deeper, and if you're really clever you could screw up your eardrum too.

my doctor once told me to never try and stick anything in my own ear apart from my elbow. good advice. unless your eyes are on stalks and come with night vision, you can't see what you're doing, for a start.

i'd say just go get it syringed when it blocks up. twice a year isn't dreadful. and maybe start a plan to avoid it getting blocked up again- like regular use of wax softening drops- not just use once its already a pain.

My husband was told by his doctor to use an ear syringe. He got great results from it.
