And I took the boy to Rite Aid where their photo studio is less expensive than anywhere else. I always go there for passport photos and the like. He was all surprised that it's even cheaper than Wal-Mart. He needed photos in black and white on a CD so he can send them to his sister in Guatemala for some papers there his family is reconstructing for him. (It must suck to have your parents be war refugees when you were born and not have a birth certificate or any real idea which of two countries you were born in.)

I talked with his sister on the phone last evening. It was sooooo hard to hear her because the signal kept fading in and out, and the boy couldn't understand her half the time either. Usually he had to repeat for me what she said, and then I'd respond to it. She seems nice, and I think she believes now that her brother does indeed have a girlfriend. He joked with his family so much in years past that he was married or engaged or whatever else that they didn't believe him when he told them about me. I told him he was the Boy Who Cried Wolf.



I said about two words to his mother, too, but the reception was so much worse there.



Gosh, I had NO idea what to say. I really wanted to make a good impression, so of course I used the "Usted" verb form, which is more formal. But other than that it's like... uh, hi, how are you, I hope your sore throat gets better soon, I'm sitting here next to your son and he's tickling me...

My fingers feel naked. I have three rings I usually wear, and I left them at my parents' house accidentally last weekend because I was washing dishes and set them on the windowsill.

Tomorrow the boy may go sledding with me and my sisters. My friend Mike gave me this old plastic sled he found in his basement and told me to have fun with it.

If my sister in Montana ever decides she doesn't like my boyfriend, she won't have a leg to stand on. I can't stand her husband, either, and she went ahead and married him.

Speaking of my brother-in-law (Gosh I hate saying that), Mike reminded me of something on the phone on Thursday night. I expect to get some negative flack from extended family members for dating an undocumented worker, though I'm going to try not to tell them that part. One of the big differences between my boyfriend and the infernal husband of my sister, Mike said, is "at least he's employable." I laughed so long and so hard. That's quite a way to spin the "undocumented worker" thing!
