When I was at the Christmas Without Cruelty fayer last weekend, I was looking around and I saw condoms on a store selling different deoderants and various other things. Anyway, I didn't think a lot of it. . . till I mentioned them to my boyfriend and he pointed out, that if they were there... there was probally something un vegan/un vegetarian or maybe tested on animals about "normal" condoms? Durex or something? What would this be?

Any help?

Sorry if this is a bit weird!

Condomi are vegan
*nods* plus they're built with excellent german engineering, and they come in a wide array of mysterious and exotic colours, flavours, and other interesting things.

also, i think it has to be said that if the situation arises, so to speak, that the choices available are 'non vegan' or 'none'... hopefully nobody is going to get the vegan police on someone who chooses to protect themselves from STI's and pregnancy.

maybe they still sell them, but surely not at Christmas without Cruelty? I mean, the clue's in the name!

Re: Nuvaring. Not everyone is happy putting hormones in thier body, and might want protection from STDs! I didnt even read this thread as "what can i use" more like just wondering.

Anyhoo

I don't think using condoms that have casein in is grounds for being beaten with the vegan police truncheon.

on the rare occasion I need them (now I have an implant, shouldn't do for another 2 1/2 years unless i change partners) I just use freebie ones from the sexual health clinic. does that make me a bad vegan? theyre expensiveeeeee. ~£3 for a box of 3... I'd be spending £10ish a week (TMI!) sod that

but yeah wtf milk protein? i read that years ago and was o_O

PF, I don't think anyone here is saying that using condoms with casein makes you a bad person or a bad vegan; the OP was just wondering what was the ingredient that made latex condoms non-vegan.

Oh, and 3 quid for 3 condoms??? I pay about £8-9 for a pack of 24 (Mates)!

I was just wondering whether people would shout at me for it! as im like, making a concious choice to get the cheapo option instead of the vegan one,

I got that £3 figure off my friend who I just asked for the sake of the thread, Ive never bought a pack in my life! (Bf used to buy them)

Also, both Durex and Trojan make a polyurethane condom that's free from animal ingredients. The Durex is called Avanti, I can't remember what the Trojan one's called. They're definitely a bit pricer that the latex ones, but you can generally find them at a regular ol' pharmacy, unlike Condomi.

A couple of things about polyurethane condoms. First of all, because they are thinner, they are more likely to break. The biggest peeve I have with the Durex Avanti ones is that their nominal width (ie diameter) is huge - 64mm!!! The normal range is 52-56mm. Seriously, check your condom packets. The Trojan ones are called Supra, and their width is 58mm. I understand that because of their thinness, they might allow for a couple extra mm, but 64??? A close friend of mine with a mild latex allergy tried Avanti a few times and reported breakage each time. I strongly suspect that it had to do with their huge size, since breakage is more likely to occur if the condom is much smaller or much bigger than needed. Ok, I know that size is a very delicate and difficult matter to discuss with guys, but I urge you to consider it when buying condoms, it can make a very significant difference.

OK, I just checked again, and it seems that Durex have a new version of Avanti out, called Avanti Ultima or something like that. The nominal width was different in the online sites I checked, but at least it looked normal. Phew.

<<<thinks of posting an Avanti story, but reconsiders

Suffice it to say, they worked just fine.

Condoms = not my favorite method of birth control.

They are so annoying....

My first time... the stupid condom did not want to fit.... damn durex lol

Actually with my wife, if something happens with the other birth control... we prefer other methods than using a condom (no no... we do not risk... we do not want babies... you know what I mean with other ways, if not, ask me in the bannedforum haha)

actually, I wondered the same thing after having bought a box. I thought they were hilarious because they were flavored, and I was a brandnew vegan (I also had a boyfriend at the time!) If the ones you saw were flavored, it may just be for the fun of saying, oh it's ok, the flavorings are vegan. So you can, um, you know...

oh never mind I just saw the other answers - I couldn't see them at first.
