What makes Thanksgiving dinner complete:

sauce or relish?
My mother makes both, but I've always preferred sauce over relish. Especially since she adds bits of orange to the relish, which I don't care for.

Cranberry sauce from a can? Nevah!

My mom gets a huge bag of cranberries from Costco for both the sauce and the relish. She doesn't follow a recipe; she makes them from memory,

Yeah, that's what I was wondering since I bought a lil container of cran relish today at Whole Foods. I only picked it over the sauce because it's cranberry orange instead of plain. What do I do with it? Eat it outta the container? I was thinking... cornbread? Seems yummy though.

Sauce is cooked and relish isn't. I like sauce better, but both are delish is homemade.

Oh..Never had cranberry relish. I make whole cranberry sauce with orange zest. YUM

My Grandma always made the relish with cranberries, sugar, and oranges. Nobody ever really ate it, but the table was never complete without it!

Oops. I voted relish, thinking it meant more of a compote than the jelly stuff.

Change my vote to sauce, then, because I LOVE making cranberry sauce. This year I'm trying something different - cranberry-persimmon sauce!

Here's an easy and yummy recipe. I guess technically it's a sauce 'cause it's cooked.

Cranberry Compote

Make at least 1 hour before serving. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks

1 medium orange

1 12-oz package cranberries

1 1/4 cups sugar

1 cup golden raisins

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp allspice

1 16-oz can sliced cling peaches

1 16-oz can sliced pears

1 16-oz can apricot halves

Grate 1 tsp orange zest and squeeze 1/4 cup fresh juice. In a 3-quart saucepan combine orange juice, zest, cranberries, raisins, sugar, salt, and spices. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 minutes or until cranberries pop and mixture thickens slightly. Add well-drained peaches, pears, and apricots. Heat through.

It is yummy, but the BF loves the canned stuff, and I'm making so many other things this year, it's easier to just pop open a can...

Eww. I hate both of them.

sauce. The relish tastes weird.... or at least the ones I've had...

Wow, I'm surprised more people didn't vote for "both". My family all likes whole berry cranberry sauce, but a couple of us also like relish. I like cranberry relish with orange peel, walnuts, and celery. Celery!

I don't like either, too tart for me. I do like cranberries in other stuff though.

OK - I make this stuff and it's SUPPOSED to be an accompaniment to the nut-roast or Tofurky or whatever... but most everyone just spoons big blobs onto their plates and scarffs the stuff down... my dad puts it on ice cream. I have a weird family...

Fresh Cranberry-Orange Relish with Ginger

(This is yummy and fresh-tasting, and it has a KICK to it!!)

Ingredients:

1 12-ounce package Fresh or Frozen Cranberries, rinsed and drained

3 unpeeled Satsuma or Clementine Mandarin oranges, cut into eighths and seeded

1 "knob" of fresh ginger root, about the length of your thumb (or less if you REALLY don't like anything too spicy)

3/4-1 cup sugar

Directions:

Place half the cranberries and half the orange slices in food processor container. Process until mixture is evenly chopped. Transfer to a bowl. Repeat with remaining cranberries, ginger and orange slices. Stir in sugar. Store in refrigerator or freezer. Best if it sets overnight before serving.

Makes about 3 cups.
