Edamame-Is the pod edible?

I bought a bag of frozen unshelled edamame and the serving size is 1/2 cup edible parts. I assumed that you were supposed to open the pod and just eat the beans. But then why do they sell them in the pods if you can't even eat them?

The pod won't hurt you, but it doesn't taste very good. I've found that when I buy them out of the pod I don't like the texture as much, I think it has to do with keeping them from going mushy.

I never eat the shells. I tried one once. Yuck!

Umm, yeah, I have actually eaten the shell because it was tasty based on how it was cooked. I didn't know until someone told me. oops

I find them more moist and flavourful when steamed whole in their pods, then salted, and then you sort of "squeeze" the beans out of their pod with your mouth when you eat them. That's how they come when you get them at a sushi restaurant, anyhow. Plus, it's fun. But if I was going to just put them on a salad or in a stirfry I'd buy them already shelled. My grocery store sells them both ways.
