Difference between oregano and basil?

I opened my basil and oregano spice jars at the same time and now I don't know which one is which (the jars only had labels on the lids). Help!

Oregano has a spicy/sweet smell, its always in pizza sauce so the smell reminds me of pizza. Basil has a cooler, slightly minty or even tea like fragrance.

Dried and ground the appearance is very similar so smell is probably the way to tell.

The problem is that both basil and oregano remind me of pizza!

oh, it's easy: the basil smells like basil and the oregano smells like oregano.

yeah, basil smells very outdoorsy. you could try tasting a pinch. i think basil should taste slightly leafy. i think oregano by itself kinda tastes disgusting, but that could be subjective.

have anyone near you who can tell the difference in smell.

I find oregano considerably more bitter to eat straight, dried.

Basil, to me has a slightly sweet and slightly peppery smell. It also looks more like flat little bits of leaf while oregano looks more like little stick bits of leaf (has a rougher, pokier texture) and the oregano has a bit of bluish tinge while the oregano is slightly yellower in it's green-ness. If all else fails, look closely the next time you shop and compare what you have.

I always think basil smells minty compared to oregano. That's how I always tell.

Okay, I think that I may have figured it out. They both look pretty similar to me, but one does look a little pokier than the other and the pokier one is also the less sweet, more pizza-like smelling one, so I am going to guess that that one is the oregano and the other is basil. Thanks for the help and let's hope that i got it right.

You could take a look at the two in the supermarket (maybe bring your jars along?) and see if you can match up the leaves!
