Sodium levels: soy sauce, tamari, braggs liquid aminos

I was at the heatlh food yesterday and I did some comparison shopping on soy sauces by sodium level.



Regular San-J brand organic soy sauce and tamari had a whopping 1000mg of sodium per serving.



Reduced sodium San-J brand tamari had 700mg per serving



Regular Bragg Liquid Aminos had 200mg per serving



( servings were all the same sizes )

yeah--- i use braggs for everything--it ROCKS!!!!!!!

Mmmmm braggs :-) I have so little now left in my bottle, gotta get another one ;-) even though this post says its lower in sodium, it sure does taste VERY salty. A little goes a VERY long way.

I think the Braggs tastes WAY saltier than the low-sodium San-J. I guess it's because you need to use more Braggs to get the same amount of flavor. I really do think you get the most flavor for the least amount of sodium with the reduced-sodium Tamari.

Bragg's achieves a lower sodium content per serving in part by specifying a much smaller serving size: 1/2 teaspoon. Most other soy sauce products specify a serving size of one tablespoon (= 6 x 1/2 teaspoon).



Bragg's has a sodium content of 660 mgs per tablespoon, which is about the same as most "lite" soy sauces.

You are right about Bragg's serving size, but your information is incomplete.



Bragg's liquid aminos still have less sodium the regular soy sauce and it even has less sodium then SanJ reduced sodium soy sauce:

Besides sodium levels, what are the differences between soy sauce, tamari sauce, and Braggs in terms of ingredients and taste?

I still think that Bragg's tastes way saltier than low-sodium San-J.



Tamari has a much richer, more nuanced flavor than Bragg's. I really don't like Bragg's much.

i've never tried tamari but...



regular soy sauce has sodium added to it. bragg's doesn't.



taste wise, i think braggs has a much lighter taste than soy sauce.

Thank you! Someone else who doesn't like Braggs! I think it tastes really weird. I love San J tamari though.

There are not differences among braggs, tamari, and soy sauce with respect to sodium levels. Braggs has convinced the world otherwise by considering a serving to be 1/2 tsp.



Per tablespoon Braggs has 840 mg sodium, San-J Tamari and Shoyu products range from 700-960 mg per tablespoon.



Depending on which of the two conflicting statements of sodium content on the Bragg site you believe, it is 840 or 660 per tablespoon.

You are mislead by inadequate American system. One serving is not to be compared with one serving of others. Bragg is using 1/2 tea spoon for one serving. While one brand of soy sauce is using 1 table spoon for one serving and contains 870 mg of sodium. 160 mg of sodium for Bragg is actually 960 mg of sodium for one table spoon that is higher than this particular brand of soy sauce. In short, Bragg is not low sodium product and should treat it as similar as other condiments like tamari and soy sauses.
