How do you pronounce tempeh and seitan?

It just occurred to me that while I have seen these 2 words in print and on package labels, I don't think I ever heard anyone say them! And the other day, I was telling someone about them, but I have no idea if I pronounced them right!

So, please give some kind of phonetic spelling for how you say them. Thanks!

Um, this is really an Arti subject, but I'll give it a shot.

Tempeh: temp~ay (as in hay)

Seitan: say~tan

So, would you say

?

You can hear .WAV files that actually pronounce these words. They are part of the following on-line dictionary entries:

tempeh

http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionar...nary&va=tempeh

seitan

http://www.bartleby.com/61/17/S0221725.html

It's pronounced SAY-tan (with tan pronounced like in sun tan).

Note that Satan is pronounced SAYT-n. So the "t" is not pronounced as part of the first syllable in seitan, but is pronounced as if part of the first syllable in Satan. Note that in seitan the vowel sound is very much pronounced in the second syllable, while in Satan it is not.

No.

TEM-pay

SAY-tan (the ei in seitan is pronounced as a as in sleigh).

don't you mean TEM-pay?
i say SAY-tahn. i don't say the a sound like in "apple" (or "tan") because that sounds like some one with an accent saying "satan," and because it just sounds terribly wrong.

Yes, you are right. I misread the accents. Thanks for the correction.

The dictionary shows 3 different pronunciations

VEEgun

VAYgun

VEJun

I was training with a professional haircare line as an educator. The haircare line is called ABBA. They are 100% vegan (VEJun). It used to drive me crazy to hear them say that, so I corrected them one day........they said they pronounce it VEJun, and that it was the correct way to say it. Well, being a vegan at the time, I protested that I was correct. Well, when I got home, I pulled out my trusty dictionary, and looks like we were both correct.

Just had to resurrect an OLD THREAD:

My sister called today and wanted me to give her a recipe...

She said "It's that recipe you made with the TEE-PEE stuff"....

Took me a minute to figure out WHAT in the world she was talking about...
I say TEM-pay and SAY-tan

My mother looked up "vegan" in the dictionary and decided that VEJUN was the proper pronunciation, even though it was only one of several. It makes me crazy to hear her say it that way. Whenever I correct her, she insists she got it from the dictionary and that's how it's supposed to be pronounced.

Maybe it's because I just don't like VEJUN as a pronunciation.

As far as I know the founders of UK vegan society Elsie Shrigley and Donald Watson pronounced it VEEgun. So that is what I am going with

Mmmm...nothing beats a big dish of Tee-Pee...

I don't like the "vejun" pronunciation much either. Sounds too much like "veggin" as in "Oh, I'm just veggin' out today."
i have a letter somewhere that says "it's cool that your a 'veggin'"

im not a vegan, but just to annoy me my uncle insists on saying vaigong (ai sounds like the word I) instead of vegetarian

I knew seitan (though I originally thought it was SEET-n) but didn't know how to pronounce tempeh until this thread. Always thought it was pronounced the same as 'temper'!)
