Alright, last month of the year, last chance to kick some tuchus in 2013.

December can be hard for people with health goals, as it's easy to let good habits slide when many of us get busy with holiday stuff. And it's OKAY to let things slide sometimes; as my mom always says, everything in moderation - INCLUDING moderation. So if you have a few less-than-stellar days, don't fret. No reason to let that screw you up.

Feel free to post any health-related goals, questions, suggestions, advice, etc.

Well, I haven't been doing fantastic. I gained 57 pounds in a year, and since I went off two meds (well off one, and switched another) I thought that was going to make it easier to lose weight. NOPE. Since September I've lost 8 pounds and gained 4. So. But I did have a fractured foot, and I was out for two weeks with a nasty cold. So there's that.

I'm not going to make any lofty goals this month because my life is in a bit of an upheaval. I'm leaving Jordan in 2.5 weeks, will be in the US for 3.5 weeks, and then traveling for 2 months. Then in California for 2-4 weeks, then moving across the country. So basically I won't be anywhere for more than a couple weeks until probably April. Ahh, life.

With that in mind, here are my lite-goals for December:
-Drink more water. Seriously. Half a liter a day is NOT enough.
-Eat greens at least 5 times once I'm in California.
-Finish the 1000-burpees-by-xmas challenge.
-Make healthy food choices when feasible.
-Don't fret too much if I'm still 183lbs when I get home to California.

Happy December, everyone!

I'm going to stop tracking calories this month and instead focus more on getting a certain portion of grains, veggies, legumes, fruits, etc. I think it'll be easier to follow in the long run.

I slipped last month with working out regularly. I was out of commission for one week in November and then lost a week due to Thanksgiving. Still have a goal of four times a week of exercise; each session being at least 30 minutes with a heart rate of at least 140 bpm.

It happens. It's never too late to get going, though!

I'm moving out of the country in a week, so we're trying to eat what we've got left. Which means yesterday we had rice with potatoes on top. Oh, well. I'm also having real trouble drinking enough water because it's so cold, and the water is freeeeezing. There's no way I'm going to heat it on the stove every time I want lukewarm water. Trying, though. My bottle is sitting right in front of the heater right now, so hopefully it'll warm up a little.

Also, not doing great on the 1,000 burpees challenge but not doing terrible either. I've done 315, so 685 left by xmas. Will do at least 20 more tonight, but try to get up to 50 more if I can.

Rice and potatoes doesn't sound too bad. I've put mashed potatoes with cheese on noodles before. It was too get the flavor of pierogies without all the work.

I am slowly getting back into working out. I slipped twice this week. I chose to read a book instead of hop on the bike. Whoops!

Also I've been tracking my calories to see if the portions bit will work. I'm trying to eat 5 servings of grains, 5-6 servings of veggies, 3-4 servings of fruit, 2-3 servings of legumes, 1 serving of nuts, and 0-1 serving of oil a day. I only occasionally consume eggs and dairy so I don't even count it, I may eat a serving less of something like nuts or legumes. Any who, it comes out to about 1700 to 1900 so I'll be ditching the calorie counting soon. Best part is I've been getting more iron by forcing myself to eat more legumes and green veggies. I'd eat only grains, fruit and nuts if I could.

Welcome, Khadija and BuddhistLady! We don't have any specific challenges (although we've tried it before and can do it again if people are interested); rather, the challenge is to try to meet the goals you set for yourself.

Those can be anything! For most people they're weight loss-related, but they certainly don't have to be. They can be all kinds of physical health, mental health, even other things if you wanted.

Also, River - that's awesome, great job!

Also also, if people are interested in having a set challenge (in addition to their personal ones), let me know. We can do that. It happened before, though it only lasted a couple months. It was things like do 500 jumping jacks this month, add 15 seconds to your plank time, etc. We can start it up (with lots of level variations for the challenges) if people want that. Or not. Either way.

I've been doing fairly well this month as far as eating goes (although I did go to the vegan bakery for coffee cake this weekend). I just started making green smoothies for breakfast yesterday. I detest any kind of greens (except for some lettuces) so they are a great way for me to get more vitamins in my diet.

As far as exercise goes, I have not been doing anything more than walking my usual 2 miles a day (walking back and forth to and from the bus stop. I probably need to start exercising more.

I won't know if I have lost any weight until I go to the doctor this Friday. The mirror says I have; but we shall see. Hope everyone is having a great start to the week!

Well the doctor's visit went great on Friday. He was very please with my plant based diet (he is also vegan which is why I chose him). As of this morning, I have lost 10 pounds this month. That was just from going vegan/plant based and not adding any additional exercise. This will certainly be the first December in which I LOST weight. I hope everyone is doing great with their December challenges!

Sorry I kind of disappeared! I hope everyone's enjoying their holidays. We've been super busy moving out of Jordan and now going back and forth between our families in Los Angeles and San Diego. Despite eating EVERYTHING, I've lost four pounds in two weeks... clearly my body likes California. Hah. Also, I finished my 1,000 (modified) burpees by Christmas.

Happy New Year!
