I went to Waitrose today and looked at the Oreos on the off-chance they'd magically become vegan since I last read a pack some time ago. To my surprise, it seemed as though they were, so I bought some.
There's nothing that looks animal-derived on the list. The packet says:
'CONTAINS WHEAT, GLUTEN, SOYA. MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF MILK.'
So it seems that the ingredients make it vegan?
Yet on the Oreo website for the UK, where I am, it states they are not vegan and contain 'whey powder (from milk).' The packet is clearly UK-identified, with UK contact address etc.
Can anyone help me in my confusion? Is this a very recent veganisation, as it were, of Oreos, that's reflected on the packet but not the site?
Seconded on the sending email suggestion! I've never had Oreos, as I went vegan before I became conscious of them even existing... Since everybody's been making such a fuss about Oreos, I really want to taste and see what they are like!
I phoned the helpline but was on hold for ages, so might try again later. They have a contact form on their site, but I'm not giving them my full address, phone number, name etc as they request. I have no desire to be bombarded by Kraft marketing.
On the Green and Blacks U.K. website, the FAQ says:
"The new communication will highlight milk as an ingredient in its previously labelled 'vegan' dark organic chocolate bars. As both the milk chocolate and dark chocolate bars are made using the same production line there is a risk of cross contact. A recent audit revealed that traces of milk residues can still be found on manufacturing equipment despite intensive cleaning."
But I went to the shops and checked the label recently and it doesn't list milk as an ingredient, only an allergen, so I suspect that this is the same for the Oreo label and the Oreo website!
I phoned the helpline and the lady said that if it said it was vegetarian on the packet and there were no animal ingredients, then...it would be vegetarian, and there would be no animal ingredients.
She put me on hold and had to check that out with someone else....turns out they hadn't told the helpline people that they were vegetarian (and vegan) now! The woman said she'd heard they'd been going to change the recipe but they hadn't actually been updated.
So the upshot is - Oreo helpline said that the labelling is right, and so the Oreos you can buy in Waitrose and Tesco (UK) are vegan, since the label has no animal ingredients listed.

I'll pop by the local tesco to see if they have the vegan version there yet! For some reason, every new thing on the market seems to arrive somewhat late here...
I ate almost a whole packet yesterday. I don't regret it.
