This reminds me of a thought I had last week. One of the reasons why cruelty to animals is so heinous and indicative of deep moral and emotional problems is because animals love, almost exclusively, unconditionally. To be able to harm or neglect a creature that looks to you with such pure affection makes you something less than human.
