True Blood & VEG references.

Anyone else watch True Blood and notice all the human rights/ animal/human liberation references that are the same things most veg people talk about too. I have watched the first 3 seasons and i am on season 4 and it happens all the time.

An Example off the top of my head. The vampires have 2 groups, ones that feed on people and ones that drink "true blood". The true blood people don't want to harm humans so a synthetic blood was created so they could live cruelty free. The other vampires think humans are here for them to consume and its their right to consume and believe they have evolved to the top of the food chain for a reason.

All kinds of animal/ human rights references are made during the various episodes.

It's certainly a legitimate comment. What Savvington is saying is that it's entirely possible the writers did not place any intentional nods to the Animal Rights movement.

I see that, but you have to understand that when you provoke a discussion, you provoke a discussion of all sorts. Otherwise discussions would be no fun.

As for the actual topic... I don't watch True Blood. But, both you and Savvington have a point; even if it's not intentional, it's certainly a parallel.

My thoughts on your example is that I don't see why you assume it's a reference based on the information provided. Are you leaving something out? A writer who happens to be a proponent of animal rights or something? Are you using the wrong word and not even talking about references?

I don't assume its a reference, but if you watch the show there is a lot of dialogue regarding human and animal rights. I was curious if anyone else who actually watches the show picks up on that as well. So i guess you don't pick up on any of that...

I can't say I've been looking for any social messages in it before, no. Although you'll find similar themes (intentional or otherwise) in a lot of vampire themed shows/films, since they're (normally) portrayed as in control of their actions, unlike various other supernatural creatures.

I also don't have any physical copies of the series so it's entirely possible I missed it. Is there some particular episode where the comparison is made?

It happens a lot on the show. I have the seasons on my puter, i could start making notes but that seems time consuming and not fun. =) I was just curious if anyone else was hearing/ seeing some of the same things i am. Vampires over the years in entertainment have always had parallels with vegetarian/vegans, so i know its nothing new. But (on true blood) the vampires who eat humans, calling them cattle, look down on the vampires who only drink the synthetic true blood, often making vegetarian or vegan jokes.

I searched google and found this quote about the series. "True Blood won hearts and ratings by playing up the tensions between vampires and humans to reflect the social intolerance, ignorance, and discrimination that still plague our country. Add one more social fight to the mix: the show is named after a vegan drink for vampires, which uses synthetic blood instead of delicious human blood. Makes one think, doesn't it?"

Now I'm curious. How do they explain the synthetic blood? How do you synthesize that kind of stuff? They'd have to produce hemoglobin... not to mention insane amounts of iron.

Tru Blood is a brand of synthetic bottled blood engineered by Japanese scientists (however, it is also mentioned by Nan Flanagan in "You Smell Like Dinner" that many of the brightest scientific vampire minds, apparently including Louis Pasteur, a non-fictional, 19th century French chemist and microbiologist, had been working on synthetic blood to make the Great Revelation possible). I think there are (actual) attempts at producing synthetic blood out there. To what extent it's successful I'm not sure, but doubtless it's less far-fetched than most things in the show.

True Blood is Officially a reference to gay rights, dixit the creator.

They are nevertheless indeed parallels with vegetarianism, kristin bauer aka pam being vegetarian ( but still eat meat a few times a year with familly like at christmas ). Alan Ball, the creator, has symphaties for vegetarians & co as a minority, he is also buddhist, i dunno if he's vegetarian himself but i don't think so being unable to find any info on the subject.

There was some article or interview somewhere explaining this stuff but i cannot find it anymore ( old one, season one was still airing )

This. From what I've seen most of the references are about gay rights. "God Hates Fangs" anyone?

But the parallels are certainly there, I've had my thought that the points they bring up could easily apply to animal rights as well.
