Help me like bananas?

You know how to some people cilantro tastes like soap? That's pretty much how I feel about bananas. However, I need to learn to like them. Does anybody have any recipes that will make me absolutely love bananas?

Never thought of Bananas as being that high in calories... Its a little over a hundred calories I think for one.
If you want calories from a fruit... try Avocados. Check out http://www.dietbites.com/Fruit-Calories.html

I try to eat one or two bananas a day for the potassium, I am thinking of picking up Raisins every other day in exchange.

BTW have you tried different riping stages of bananas? I really prefer the greener ones, the texture is better and they taste a little green.

When I think of the best ways to eat bananas besides just peeling them.

I have no problem with avocados, and I love them to death. Unfortunately, my local store has a crap section of them, AND they're expensive.

I love peanut butter. I'm just not sure that peanut butter will mask the taste.

No, not really. A small banana is only about 90 calories. Try nuts, nut butters (justin's makes heavenly flavored butters). of course these come with a lot of fat too, but yanno, the good kind.

BUT if you are determined to eat nanners, smoothies are the way to go. silk light choco soy milk, banana, and some peanut or almond butter - heavenly. tastes like a peanut butter cup. sometimes a throw some frozen blueberries in there for texture and thickness too. you wont taste the banana, not much anyway!

Bananas aren't really high in calories. They are high in sugar (for a fruit) if that's what you mean. I also don't see any reason to "force" yourself to eat bananas if you don't like them. They have a pretty strong flavor, so if you don't like the way they taste I'm not sure what you can do about it. Are you sure you're eating them when they're ripe? A lot of people eat them when they're completely yellow and even a little green. They definitely don't taste good then. Many people think the little black flecks mean the banana is rotten, but they actually indicate ripeness. Sorry if you already know all this. It's just that I've talked to many people who cannot tell when a banana is ripe. I have a friend who refuses to eat them if they have any black flecks on them at all. I don't even think you can digest them properly if they aren't ripe.

I like to freeze my bananas for 24 hours, (peel them first) and then blend them up with other fruit or cacao powder. (I use a vitamix) It's still going to taste like banana though. I also used to make banana waffles pretty regularly. Banana pancakes are great too.

A medium banana is approximately 105 calories.

I'll have to find the nut butters (at a relatively decent price). I keep forgetting to go to Costco and get Nutella.

Spoonerism: Actually, I didn't know that.. So I should wait for them to get more brown before eating them?

Do you like dried fruits? Raisins, dates, figs, etc etc. Fruit's dehydrated version of crack, IMHO.

Just 1/4 a cup of them is about 100 kcal, give or take.

I agree about the smoothies. Also pineapple is awesome with bananas in a smoothie. I like to make smoothies with just banana and a little soy milk (and some ice if I forget to freeze my bananas) and then add some vanilla to it. I find that the vanilla masks the banana flavor a little and makes it taste more like a vanilla shake.

Do you have access to plantains? You can grill them with some cilantro and a little oil for something more savory (and different) though if it's the texture you don't like then you probably wouldn't like it much. There's actually lots of savory dishes you can make with plantains like Mofongo: http://veganricans.blogspot.com/2008...ed-tempeh.html

I love almost all fruit, and agree with Scorpius' statement about dried fruit being like crack. I have a definite tendency to gorge on fruit in general, but dried fruit is even more of a temptation.

LilBigBug, I'd have to agree with the posters who suggested there's no need to force yourself to eat a food which you really don't like. You mentioned that you wanted to increase your intake of calories, and we all need calories, but I think bananas would give your blood sugar levels a jolt if they became a really significant portion of your diet: their caloric content is largely sugar.

IMHO, beans take quite a bit of work to make them tasty- but their carbohydrates are of a type which digests more slowly (except for soybean, which has many of its calories as fat). Nuts and seeds are quite high in calories (as fat); they can be expensive, but for the calories you get, they're a pretty good buy compared to bananas (or most fruits). Nuts are another "crack"-like food for me though.

I hope this helps- and good luck!

My husband hates bananas. Not only does he have a fully enjoyable life without bananas, but he's also capable of consuming plenty of calories without eating bananas.
I vote no bananas for you, instead, eat nuts, dried fruit, or anything with oil to get more calories into your diet.
Agreed with the posters who say that there are plenty of other ways to get calories.

Life's too short to force yourself to eat foods you hate. (Although I happen to like bananas, especially banana bread, banana cram pie, banana/peanut butter/chocolate soymilk smoothies.)

I don't know how to help bananas, so I don't know how to help you like I help them.

I'm joining you in wanting to "train" myself to like bananas! I just think there's so many dishes out there with bananas that look so yummy, besides, they're practical to snack on if you're out and about. So, like I want to get myself to like leafy greens more, I'm trying to get into bananas.

I don't think it's a horrible thing to try, it can only enrich my culinary skills and experience

And right now I'm sitting here with a banana and have already eaten a third... Well, still not my absolute favourite, but somehow it's not as bad as I remembered it. Maybe it's like olives, never liked those, now I love them.

Edit: Finished the banana. Go me.
