Best vegan protein powder without soy, wheat, gluten,dairy?

I need to supplement my protein because I no longer eat dairy(lactose intolerance), am allergic to soy and wheat(possibly gluten intolerant), and do not like beans that much. When I was making the transition to vegetarin I occasionally ate shellfish but now I need to be sure I am getting enough with my limitations. I do eat and love nuts and seeds regularly. I eat lots of greens and mushrooms. I am a new vegetarian and I really want to be sure I am getting all the amino acids my body needs and in the right amounts.

Please give me some insight and suggest what you have learned is the best powder for my purpose. I will try to get a variety of the foods I can eat and also eat some beans and lentils b ut I want to do smoothies with the protein powder to supplement. Ty

I believe you can get pea, rice, and hemp protein powders. As for which one is better, I have no clue, but if you can find any of those they should be gluten free and vegan (unless some extra ingredients have been added, check to be safe.) I recall seeing a chart comparing the amino acids in these different types of powders before, but I honestly can't find it. If I come across it I'll post it in here.

Assuming the guy did his stuff right, gemma pea protein is apparently the highest in essential amino acids, which I guess would make it the best? I don't know exactly how to interpret all of that, but that thread may give you some information you can use.

I have pea protein powder. I think it's Now brand. My problem with protein powders is getting them to mix well. I hate that gritty feel like I'm drinking sand. Maybe that's the fault of my cheap, old blender. But, it doesn't taste bad. It doesn't really have much taste at all.

Ty everyone. I am not sure I will enjoy the taste of the protein powders. I am just worried that I will not get enough without wheat, soy and a lot of beans. How much beans would I have to eat if I were also eating oats and seeds and nuts?

That depends on your body size and your activity level, among other things. The recommendations I've seen are generally 50-100 grams of protein for a normal sized and healthy adult. If you can eat enough to reach somewhere in that area on a daily basis, you'll probably be okay. I'm not trained in this though, if you're very worried you could go see a professional and get a very thorough plan made for yourself.

I think you are stuck with pea, rice, hemp protein powder. I know pea powder is very gritty. I stopped taking it in favor of soy, very smooth (but you are allergic). I don't know about rice and hemp though. It is correct that you need upwards to 100 grams of protein a day, but eating certain beans, seeds, and nuts are also high in fat and calories.

100 grams! That's excessive. Roughly it's about 50g a day....

If you want some protein powder, opt for rice, hemp or pea proteins.

If you want to add more protein to your diet without using protein powder, I have a link in my signature to a blog post I made that shows why vegans don't have to worry about protein as well as including different, cheap foods that you can sneak into your meals (complete with meal suggestions) that have all your essential amino acids.

As far as I know, beans themselves don't have all the essential amino acids. Beans and rice together do though. Here's an article I found regarding amino acids and vegetarians:

If you scroll down a little, you'll see a blue-purple "fan" under "Protein Quality." This is a spectrum of the essential amino acids available in a food on this website. As you can see, black beans have all of them.

Some legumes may be missing an essential amino acid, but for the most part legumes contain all your essential amino acids. They may have just a little less of one, but they still contain all of them.

I use it on occasion in my smoothies (however I use about 1/8 of a scoop if even) I really like the texture when blended up in that amount but I imagine it does get pretty gritty...

I just bought the Nutiva 50% Hemp Protein Powder
I put it in my smoothies... its a bit grainy, but not too bad

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned quinoa in this thread. Sure, it isn't a protein powder, but it is a vegan source of the full range of amino acids. So trying to get a complete amino acid profile is as simple as adding quinoa to your diet. I've personally just used it in place of rice, or with a mixture of rice and barley. I've even had quinoa sushi at a restaurant before. Here in Portland we even have quinoa pancakes at a couple food carts.

When it comes to protein powders I got a few different kinds to try from trueprotein.com and didn't have any issues with them being gritty. Then again, I usually put a banana or two into the mix though, which probably helps. Or I put some greens in there blended up well, and with plenty of water or soy/rice/almond/hemp milk as well. I don't have a real preference as far as the flavors go, but I did find that although I couldn't really taste the mint in the chocolate mint, it did lend it a fresh taste. And being able to customize them with not just different flavors, but a vitamin mix and/or electrolytes is a nice touch also, and not much more expense.

The vegan personal trainer that told me about trueprotein.com had a code for 5% off too, so feel free to use EDB949 to get a little more of a discount. Also another hint for the site, the S&H gets more reasonable as your order gets closer to say about $50, so about 8Lbs of powder. You can get variety by getting 2Lbs of each kind you want to try. I'll be using the site myself for when I hike the PCT, as I'll be having a good deal of the stuff mailed to me each week while I am out hiking 20+ miles a day.

I opt for around 55 grams myself. Your best bet would be to track your diet on a site like Sparkpeople.com, or fitday.com

BTW, can you eat tempeh? Some people with soy allergies can eat it in this fermented state.
That site reminded me of tritical. I remember reading about that high protein grain back in high school, and really haven't heard of it since!

I've been using All Pro Science Complete Veggie Protein - gluten- dairy - soy free - I like the vanilla. Best part for me is no tummy problems later!
