I just learned Harrison's mommy Loretta passed away last fall in the FS magazine thing that gets sent out quarterly.
She was pretty timid normally, but if you offered her food she wouldn't mind you much and would let you pet her. She got spooked easily though, but I don't blame her. She was a really good mom to Harrison and his BFF Cupid (I believe that's him in the background of the picture). Before she was rescued with him, she was used as a breeding cow for over a decade and was sold to at least three different farmers, each branding her side with their insignia. Harrison was the only baby she got to keep. I'll miss her so much, too.
Times like this when I wish I didn't live so far from the shelter. I wanted to go visit so many times last year but life got in the way and I never got to. I have it in my mind that this year I'll be back, but I said the same last year and who knows if that'll happen. I was already vegetarian and then vegan long before I knew about FS and interned there, but a lot of the animals there changed my life. For starters, I never got all up close and personal with a cow before going to FS. I've seen some before, but I never got to know them and see how they each have distinct personalities and attitudes, likes, dislikes, friends, etc. It put a new light on things. I never even knew how a pig's eyes look exactly like a human's. I didn't know that goats will literally eat everything if they wanted to and the whole "eating a tin can" thing really may not be a joke. Knowing them makes the choices I make in life much more personal, e.g. I don't buy leather not only because it's part of a dead animal, but I can look at it and see any one of my bovine friends.
But anyway, I love cows, and I wish everyone got to be friends with one or some.

One of the ladies I interned with in January started working there for most of last year as a tour guide and I think she's interning there again currently. The pictures she posts just adds to my longing to go back.
