The best remedy for me immediately is to take some ibuprofen (3 of 'em) and that will take the swelling down. But in the long term you should talk to your GP or your dentist, because things may really be out of alignment (as you say they feel). Have you felt stressed lately? Sometimes you can clench your teeth in your sleep and even grind them, which will make your jaw act up (whether or not there is actually anything mechanically wrong with it). Good luck.
I have TMJ too, it is the worst!! I get jawlock a lot, I will be eating and all of a sudden I get the worst pain ever when I try to chew... so bad that it brings tears to my eyes and I can't eat anymore. My aunt got the surgery for it but it actually made her TMJ worse!!! Its hopeless
Don't worry about it though rainbowmoon, it is very likely just as you said, because you slept on it the wrong way. If this is the first time you've ever experienced it, I'd suggest ibprophen and try not to chew too much. If it happens again, then you can buy a nightguard at a drug store or go to your dentist if you'd rather, because you may be grinding.
