What to do with sour/bitter cantaloupe ?

I have a small ripe cantaloupe that I bought a couple days ago - definitely ripe (very very juicy and the inside is the right color, and very soft). The fruit is terribly bitter though! I don't want to waste it, but it really doesn't taste very good eating it plain (all I did is cut it in half and remove the seeds - eating the fruit with a spoon - it's very soft - very easy to 'cut' with the spoon, so I am 100% sure it is ripe).



ugh.



Any suggestions? :-)

If you're not vegan, try drizzling a little honey over top. If you are, maybe some maple syrup? You definitely need something sweet

cube it and freeze it then puree into a smoothie with sweetener to your liking.

I was thinking of freezing it and doing something with it. I've never had a cantaloupe smoothie before - I guess now is as good of a time as any to try it!

I was gonna suggest the smoothie....I have done that before and its yummers.

Am I the only one who thinks it sounds spoiled?

I've had a bad experience with slightly off tasting melon.

Well, since two of you have voted that it may be bad, I am going to go with that. My 'motto' when I was an omni was always "if in doubt, throw it out" and I guess that would apply to fruit/veggies as much as meats & dairy!

Good because I was thinking the same thing after reading the description of it. There are a lot of foods that I feel okay eating if they're a little over their expiration date but some soft funky tasting melon is NOT one of those things. Rotten melon has a very vile and chemical taste/smell (IMO) and if I accidently eat a bite of it I spit it out and chuck the rest of it in the garbage. It's not something to mess with and try to salvage.

yeah I've had cantaloupe, and I'm sure it was sweet...sweet enough not to need sugar.

Thanks! Yea, the last thing I need right now is to get food poisoning...what a way to convince others that eating vegan is healthy, huh?
