How many pounds of pasta is needed to feed 40 people

Anyone with experience in feeding a large group of people?



My wife needs to make a pasta dish for her company picnic.



How many 16oz (1lb) boxes should she buy?



(My guess - 1 box will feed three people, so 40/3=13 boxes (rounded)

Is the pasta all they're eating? I'd say you could probably feed 4 people per 1 lb box, but it's better to have too much than not enough, so 3 per box might be a safer estimate.

I would say that 5 pounds should be enough. I make pasta salad for picnic during the summer fairly often (with a large amount of veggies added) and I can feed 7-10 people on one pound of pasta with several veggies mixed in.



If this is for a company picnic I am sure that the pasta dish won't be the only thing everyone is eating. I almost always have leftovers from my pasta salad.

As a main dish, calculate 100 g (roughly 3.5 oz) and as a side, 60 g (~2 oz) per serving of pasta. At a company picnic people might only take a bit of everything to try, and not a regular "meal size" serving, and not everyone likes everything anyway, etc.



I would actually calculate more like 40 g (~1.5 oz) per person. Also depends on the other ingredients (and how rich/filling they are) of the dish your wife is going to make. 5 lbs sounds reasonable to me too if you want to make sure everyone gets at least one serving.

I'd say 4-5 people to a box if it's a main dish serving (because you figure you're putting other things in the pasta, not just eating plain boiled pasta) and probably twice that for a side dish serving. So maybe 8-10 side dish servings per box, so probably 4-5 boxes.
