Iron Deficiency

I went to the doctors last night and she's told me I'm Iron Deficient, all the rest of my bloods came back normal. She told me to go buy an Iron...

I went to the doctors last night and she's told me I'm Iron Deficient, all the rest of my bloods came back normal. She told me to go buy an Iron Supplement and we'd redo my bloods in a month and see what the Iron levels are. It all seems very standard and logical to me and I've purchased the supplement and taken the first tablet.

This annoyed me a little, not only is it a terrible cliche, but I make sure I get a lot of iron in my diet, although I don't get out a calculator and work out the iron in my diet. I eat foods that I thought were high in iron, things like spinach, silverbeet (Chard), rocket (arugula). I don't eat a small amount of these vegetables either, but it looks like I need more. So I was wondering what everybody else does to keep their Iron Levels up?

I've done some research on the net and it seems that the iron level in vegetarians is not significantly lower than omnivores (I read that as it is lower, but not a lot). I also found out some that 20% of heme-iron (the type found in red meat) is absorbed and only 2%-20% of non-heme-iron (plant based iron). Also calcium doesn't help the absorption of iron and I should try and have all my calcium away from my iron. The one bright side of my findings is that Vitamin C helps with the uptake of Iron too, and vegetarians have higher level of Vitamin C than average. It certainly seems to me that it's much harder for us vegetarians to get our iron.

So yeah, how do you all make sure you get enough Iron? Does anybody do it without a supplement or multi-vitamin and what's your trick?

I recently destroyed my computer keyboard with Diet Coke (don't ask) and had to pull out a very old AT keyboard from the 1980's era to temporarily take its place, and seriously I'm actually enjoying it! This thing weighs a ton and makes my fragile little fairy of a keyboard embarrassed by comparison. It makes a wonderful click when I hit the keys and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed that. Anyone else miss the old style components?

Tonight I made this streudel for dinner. It was easily veganized with Daiya mozzerella cheese and by leaving out the Romano cheese. It was amazing. The Daiya really added to it. I also added mushrooms and seasoned the veggies with Italian seasoning and dried basil. I cannot say enough about this dish. My husband flipped over it as well. I am a very seasoned cook and was so shocked at how such simple ingredients come together to make something so spectacular.

Bacon in your vegetarian soups, turns out those beans were cooked with lard, didn't realize that this ingredient was a meat product. Not sure about you, but there have been slip ups on my part, and I always feel so bad about them. Despite never being a Christian, I feel better after confessing them, and thought that this could make a good sticky thread if others felt the same way. Either way, I am feeling horrible about a recent incident involving anchovies.

I went camping with my brother and mother for mother's day. My mom got the food, and as it turns out the main vegetarian meal for me had anchovies as a minor ingredient. We were already packed up and driving there, and my brother was making her feel bad enough for forgetting the ice. I didn't have the heart to tell her that my food wasn't vegetarian. So I kept quiet and ate the food with anchovies in it. Feel bad about it, but I know I would feel bad about telling my mom too. Anyway, there is my slip up, feel free to console, post your own slip up, or hit the back button.

I was just curious if any of you guys have switched your pets to veggie pet food? I've read about it, but I am a little nervous that it could be unhealthy for them. I have not had a chance to visit the vet yet about it. Also, I'm curious what your personal philosophies are regarding this. Is it okay for pets to have meat in their food because they are animals themselves, or is it not okay because of cruelty in pet food manufacturing (that is what bothers me). I'm interested to hear your views!
