The derailment of the "why do you drink" thread has inspired me to start a beer appreciation thread, and it's companion thread, the wine appreciation thread.
We talk a lot about food on the boards, but beverages like wine, beer and other kinds of liquor do not get the same attention.
I wanted to create a safe place for us to discuss these beverages, so we can share our knowledge and experiences with each other.
What have you been drinking lately? Share your tasting notes, and tips.
Do you have a regional preference?
What sort of microbrews are in your area?
How about food pairings? Beer and food parings are becoming trendier. We know beer and pizza go well. What other combos have you discovered?
Personally, my pallet is exhasted by the craft beer arms race to make more and more extreme brews. The earliest I remember this happening is with Stone and their hyper IBU anniversary IPA from the late 90's. It seems to be automatically assumed that more is better (of whatever ingredient)regardless of the taste or drinkability....and a perfectly good beer will be rated low/disregarded just because it doesn't stand up and smack you in the taste buds.
I finally got my Boulevard Chocolate Ale. Most liquor stores around town sold out their allotments in 15 minutes or less, even with a 1-bottle-per-person limit, or had done a waiting list and sold their entire allotment before they even got their delivery. Though from what I hear, it's sitting on shelves collecting dust in Boston and Chicago. Wish they would have kept more for the hometown crowd.
I'm excited to try New Belgium's new spring seasonal "Dig," but I don't feel like it's really spring yet. Even though it's been in the upper 60's this week.
Continuing my recommendations of beers not good enough for RL...
Sam Adams Dark depths IPA (Baltic IPA)..really a black IPA.
I don't care for most black IPAs. The flavors just don't seem to mesh well. But SA has recently released their version. IMO, it's very drinkable, and substantial enough (flavor, IBU's and ABV) for beer geeks.

I beg all of you, please go out of your way to avoid purchasing InBev (Budweiser) products. Heaven forbid they should use their enormous cash flow to make craft quality beers (under a different name, of course so as not to offend their base)..but no.. instead they have to force the competition off the shelves...

Never seen it around here before... but will keep an eye out if I hit one of the specialty beer/wine stores.
This is my hands down favorite Scotch Ale, I usually pick up a couple of growlers of it when visiting my daughter who lives probably 1/4 mile from the brewery.
Wachusett Larry Imperial IPA. - A well made Imperial IPA with grapfruit overtones (from the hops), not my favoraite hop imparted flavor, but if you like grapefruit, you'll like this beer
Brewdog make some formidable beers try trashy blonde and riptide.
