Anita Joyce This is a very real struggle for many people, thanks for sharing. I at times have struggled with cheese. I hope you are feeling better and are back on the wagon lol.

Aniserose1> Many people who have been vegetarian for a long period of time develop an "allergy" to meat. Basically your system is no longer accustom to digesting it and could have just the reaction you are experiencing.

A similar thing happened to me a few years ago when I went to an Asian restaurant and ordered a dish that the waitress assured me had no meat in it. It turns out she lied; the sauce was made with beef broth. I was so very sick shortly after eating some of it that I vomited hard enough to burst some vessels in my eyes. I never went to that restaurant again.

If you want to start eating meat again, (hopefully not), you will have to re-accustom your system to it by starting with very tiny amounts and gradually increasing the portions over time.

Emma JC The allergic reaction from the tick isn't at all like indigestion or diarreah, but anaphalactic reaction where the throat swells and breathing is impaired. It's like the reaction from allergies to bee stings, you'd need an epipen to combat the reaction.

Individual reactions to allergies vary by individual... from Wikipedia....

After the delayed onset, the allergic response is typical of most food allergies, and especially an IgE mediated allergy, including severe whole-body itching, hives, angioedema, gastrointestinal upset, and possible anaphylaxis.[10] In 70% of cases the reaction is accompanied by respiratory distress and as such is particularly harmful to those with asthma.[11]

Capstan One of the first things I noticed, when I went vegetarian, many years ago, was a lessening of the pain in my gut. The truth is, I hadn't even recognized the pain, because I had eaten meat for so long (my whole life) that it just seemed normal to me. It was fascinating how, giving up meat, my mental concentration began to improve, because I wasn't being distracted by discomfort in my GI tract. That alone, convinced me vegetarianism was the right thing to do.

Several years later, after I had gone full vegan, I had occasion (I won't go into the details) to eat a hamburger, and immediately, there was an onslaught of pain in my stomach. All I can tell you is, in a couple of days, the pain, along with the burger, passed, and I felt better again. To this day, that episode serves as a reminder to me never to eat meat, no matter how hungry I might feel. It just isn't worth it.

Hope you feel better soon!

1. The mind is a powerful thing and knowing that you were eating something that you really didn't want to could be the cause...

2. You may have been bitten by the Lone Star tick.... people who are bitten and you then eat red meat react as you have detailed... I am not sure where you live, it has now reached Canada and is apparently all over the USA.

Just out of curiosity, and you don't have to answer if you don't want to, what made you want to eat the burger anyway?

silva Why did you do that?
Don't do that again!
I would hope by now you're feeling better. If not maybe maybe a bit of food poisoning - e-coli or something.
Ginger and bubbly water/ ginger ale may help
