jessandreia How much protein per day are you trying to consume?
If you're OK with consuming wheat, seitan is a great source of protein.

MirandaLee I have a hard time consuming protein as well. Especially when trying to lose weight/build muscle. What works for me is a protein shake. I don't use them to replace a meal, they are more like a "nutrition" drink. It took me a LOOOONG time to find one that didn't taste gross, though.

If you eat a variety of healthy foods (legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruit), and if you consume enough calories to maintain your energy and weight, then you will get enough protein.

Legumes (beans, lentils, dry split peas, and soy foods) are the protein superheroes of vegetarian nutrition. You don't need to eat a huge bowl of beans, though. Instead, you can just add beans to foods that you already like. I like to do this:

1. Add cooked lentils or mashed tofu to spaghetti
2. Add canned beans (rinse well) to your favorite soup
3. Add some mashed tofu to oatmeal
4. Mix some canned vegetarian chili (available at any supermarket) to your tacos or burritos

silva Well, you don't have to eat all healthy to be vegetarian, or vegan.
Are you saying you're eating worse since going veg? Or that health was a major factor in being veg?

Certainly the top foods for health are found in plants. Get beans, legumes, seeds, and some nuts. Hummus, fat free refried beans, other bean dips and sandwich spreads. All kinds of leafy veggies. The rainbow range of veggies. Assorted fruits, esp berries. Onions, mushrooms. Soy - in soy milk, tofu, tempeh, edaname. Whole grains

I eat all that, but also love having a warm Boca chik'n in a salad, Trader Joes soy chorizo in tacos, Beyond Meat feisty beef for a Mexican pizza, frozen veggie burgers on hand. Tofurky Italian sausage for spaghetti.

the longer you're vegetarian the more you'll learn the switches. But again, eating healthy is a different story!

Hi I have been vegetarian for about 6 months. I love the lifestyle but seem to be consuming some bad food maybe just from older habits that are refusing to die. I eat great otherwise but wanted to know from you guys and gals how to even cut the bad eating out all together. I find that I am having a bad time finding out ways to consume protein without meat based products. I dont miss eating meat in the least and I am thrilled that I dont.
