|dormouse||I opened a pouch of Westsoy Tofu recently that had foul-smelling yellow slime coating the tofu. And it was not even expired. Needless to say, I did not eat it.|

|silva||I've gotten spoilt tofu that was well within the dates. Trader Joe had a rash of bad ones- not so bad that they puffed up, but you could see the water was discolored, a bit foamy, and the texture was like 'crumbly'-not right. I also tasted a bit, and yes, very soury|

It's not worth the risk of gastrointestinal invaders. Plant- based or no, food can grow harmful bacteria. Throw it out and have a can of beans instead.

|choligeetu||Chinese usually eat "Stinky Tofu" which is fermented on purpose. According to the manufacturer of this product, it is OK if tofu produces white hair (though you may not like the smell, then throw it away), but you must discard it if the hair is in other colors, such as green, red or yellow.|

TOfu before expiration
So do you guys think it is normal for tofu to have some smell, when it is not after expiration?
I had 2 tofus with the same expiration (well, only week from now, but still), and the first was with no smell, the second one smelled a little bad (not like a fish, bananas.. dont know how to tell it). Taste was normal.
I ate only a little. Whart do you think? The texture is normal as wll

I always try to use up tofu before its best by date. Once I open it, I use it within two days or so, and I change the water to keep it fresh. You'll definitely know when tofu is off; it has a horrid smell when it's gone bad.

hi I was told by a tofu producer, that if it is not an air-tight package or once opened. It's better to change the water everyday to keep it away from going slimy. So I guess that's probably one of the reasons it went wrong....

I'd toss it after the expiration date, I don't think it's remotely worth risking it for $1.50 or $3 tofu.

Please do not use out of date tofu if its been opened and I think if its been unopened it should be okay..

Please do not eat tofu after expiry date it can make you very ill as i done just that,its not worth it..it causes weeks of dizziness.and infections..

hm-m-m, hard to know why for sure, but if some bacteria was multiplying inside the gas by-product they produce when multiplying could build up
enough pressure to burst the packaging. Maybe there was a small hole or leak in the package breaking the seal? Just a random guess.

In USDA training, I learned that the best buy date is supposed to provide a week's time to consume the opened product without loss of quality due to age. So of course there's no prediction that it will automatically make you ill on a specific date.
But as the previous veggie wrote, use your senses to double-check food safety. My motto is when in doubt, throw it out. You wouldn't to get food-poisoning to save a $2.00 pkg of tofu, even tho' it is better not to waste when possible.
Think I'll start cleaning my fridge now. Thx for reminder.

|La Grenouille||Well, recently I read about fermented tofu... And I had some past-due date in the fridge. I used to make blue cheese (because it stank as blue cheese). It ended up being pretty good, and nobody was hurt.|

I toss any food that is expired. I would rather do that & lose a few bucks than be sick later.

That happened to me too, and the tofu was not even past its best before date... I never quite understood tht one.

More than a week or two after, I would toss of compost it.
I have years old unopened tofu sitting in my fridge and I can see the mold growing on it.............

|runnerveggie||I forgot to say - I really have gotten strict about food that's past the expiration date. Unless it's dry goods that are unlikely to have gone rancid, I just get rid of food that's past the date. Food that's past the "best by" date might not be unsafe (if it says "expiration date," then definitely toss it), but it's not worth ruining a recipe if one of the ingredients doesn't taste quite right.|

I had tofu kinda explode in the fridge before, the packet built up so much pressure it broke the seal and oozed out, smelt like really smelly cheese. Can't remember how old it was.
But yea, if it looks and smells good, it's probably fine.

my rule of thumb is that the length past expiration depends on the original expiration period...if that makes sense :P
for tofu that normally expired in 3 weeks i probably wouldn't use it 3 weeks late...unless it was like Mori-nu or something that lasted longer. just me tho, it's prob ok.. heh

|fadeaway1289||I've purchased tofu with old expiration dates before numerous times because they were marked down. I never had any issues with them being bad. I've always drained, cut, and frozen them though as soon as I get them home.|

|Tinoberserker||Good luck. I had a piece of tempeh that i took out the fridge the other day and i was expecting some fuzzy green stuff on it. It wasn't at all green it turned red in some places (but still smelled horrible). That was a first for me|
