Is there such a thing? There's a recipe I *really* want to try on the side of my chocolate Silk carton & it calls for malt powder. Please tell me I can find some that's vegan!

Malt is made of (malted) barley and is vegan.

Malt is what beer is made of, but it is sometimes used as a sweetener/flavoring. :)

Mmm... now I need to make a strawberry malt. :)

What's the recipe you're going to try? I haven't bought any malt for a while, so I don't remember where to get it. For some reason I'm thinking it would be in the aisle where the powdered coffee creamers are, but I could be way off. But I do know for sure that you can get it in regular grocery stores (we bought it regularly when I was growing up)... you just may have to ask exactly where they stash it.

I bought malt from homebrew shops when I tried homebrewing. I don't know if you can find it in a grocery store or not.... Maybe in the sugar/sweetener section?

Malt that is sold in the grocery store (Carnation) is not vegan, it contains whey and milk solids. I happened to have some malt kicking around the house. My husband is a malt fiend. You can find the unadulterated malt in a homebrew or HFS like Oatmeal said.

I've tasted the malt powder from the homebrew shop and to me, it tastes exactly like the stuff sold in the grocery, so I think it would probably work. Look in your yellow pages under wine making, probably.

Those homebrew shops are good resources. I've also bought gypsum there for making tofu.
I hear a lot of people calling for "humane" treatment of animals. Given humanity's history of violence and greed, shouldn't we be aiming a little higher?

Ah. Considering my dad also brews beer, I may have gotten a little mixed up there. :o I know I can have the stuff that's in his cupboard now, and I know when I was little we got malt from the grocery, but it may not have been vegan.

Sorry for the mis-info.

I'm not sure you guys are talking about the same thing. There's Malt, from grains and used in brewing and such and then Malted Milk Powder used for cooking and chocolate malts..is it the same?
