Is "enriched" wheat the same as processed wheat?

I found some delicious dry pasta (penne, fusili, spaghetti) at Trader Joes a few weeks ago. The package says it's multigrain with flax, and the ingredients has enriched durum whole wheat flour as the first ingredient. I think I read somewhere that "enriched" means "processed" like white flour is. Is that true? Is this still a whole wheat product? Thanks in advance!

"Enriched" means they added back some of the nutrients lost in the removal of the bran and the germ. So it isn't a whole wheat product. If you're looking for whole grain products, look for ones that say 100% whole grain on the label.

Products (such as pasta and bread) that say "made with whole grain" or just whole grain often just have a small percentage of whole grain flour and sometimes a small percentage of bran as part of the mix. They aren't 100% whole grain, but they can help you get the daily 48g of recommended whole grain in your diet.

Thanks tearsong2! I really like those pastas, and I stocked up on them when I went to TJ last weekend. Once I run out of them, I'll be sure to only get 100% whole wheat. I do have some very tasty organic 100% whole wheat pasta, maybe that brand carries different types also...

Sounds like it's whole wheat flour with extra nutrients added... Don't know for sure, though.

That would be great if it is, since it's so good! Maybe I should email Trader Joes?

I missed the part where it said enriched durum whole wheat flour. It's weird that they enriched a whole grain flour, though. Usually most manufacturers wouldn't do this. Enriching a flour is meant to add nutrients lost back into it. Milling a whole grain causes some loss of nutrients, but not near as much as milling white flour, so most skip that step seeing it as an unnecessary expense.

I would probably check with Trader Joe's to be sure.

I have had that pasta from Trader Joe's. I second that it's really good!
