I have just tried gem squash and it's horrible!!
Does anybody else agree?
Do all the squashes taste similar?
I have a feeling I'm going to find turning vegetarian rather difficult!

All squash varieties have their own unique flavour. Some are rather sweet and good while some are a bit acrid tasting. You probably found one of the more bitter ones unfortunately.
Personally, I love squash and there's not too many varieties I don't like. Some of my favourites are butternut, bon-bon squash and sugar pumpkin when it's in season. I've also recently discovered kabocha and I love it lots. :lick: :hungry:
Keep trying different varieties. You'll find one (two.... twenty ;) ) that you like, I'm sure.

I don't really like most squash. I love pumpkin (bread, soup, pie, etc) and zucchini (in spaghetti sauce). Being vegetarian isn't that hard. There's tons of other stuff to eat besides squash.

I have never heard of gem squash. Is this a thick-skinned winter squash, or an edible-skinned summer variety?
Anyway, just because you don't like one particular type of food isn't the end of the vegetarian world. There's hundreds of different foods out there waiting for you to try them. There are plenty of people here who are picky and don't like certain foods. It's easier if you like all vegetables, but it certainly isn't necessary.
Finally, don't give up on a whole class of foods after just one try. Try some different kinds of squash cooked different ways before you decide for sure how you feel about it. I recommend acorn squash baked, scraped out of the skin, and mashed up with butter and brown sugar; or zucchini sliced and sauteed in a little olive oil until browned, seasoned with a little salt and pepper.

I'm not sure whether gem is a winter or summer squash, we boiled it and scraped it out of the skin afterwards and it was just nasty, nasty mush.
We tried butternut squash today. We boiled it then put it in the oven and roasted it. It was nice. We are going to try it deep fried like chips next time.

I'm glad you liked the butternut squash. See, squash isn't so bad! Heck, you could deep-fry a piece of tire rubber and it would probably be good.
