My mom used to put lemon juice in my hair when I was a little girl to make it shiny - she never said anything about it lightening it, although I was always out in the sun so it was light anyway.
I'm sure it wouldn't be damaging, especially if there's nothing done to your hair already.

Its not damaging, but what color is your hair? If your hair is dark it WILL NOT give you sunny blond highlights; instead your hair will turn very, very orangy. I did it when I was in like 6th grade and was very disappointed with the results.

All you do is take some lemon juice and put it in a spray bottle, then spray your hair down, according to how much or how little lightening you want. And don't forget to pay attention to where natural highlights are supposed to be- ie., don't spray like, just the back of your head. Then, you go out in the sun for about two hours- direct, beating, sunlight- or, pull out your blow drier. ( I like the sunlight method better, its more natural looking...)
I've helped many of my blonde friends do this to their hair...:) Its not dramatic at all, just looks kind of like natural sun highlights.
