Anyone like swing music? I'm planning on ordering some new music and am looking for some more bands to try. The swing movement has pretty much died, but I still love the music and still love to dance to it. My favorite classic swing artist is Louis Jordan. I have all his CDs and his movies. He's just my absolute favorite. So that's the style that I like best, the jive up-beat east coast swing and Lindy Hop. Not so keen on west coast swing or the more laid back jazz music. My favorite "modern" swing groups are the Mighty Blue Kings and Indigo Swing, though both of them have broken up already I guess.

Do you have any groups you'd recommend? I'm thinking about buying Johnny Boyd's solo album, and I want to check out Swing Session and Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers and maybe some other groups. I'm not too big on the Royal Crown Revue or groups like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, they just don't have the right beat to dance too. The problem with swing music is that it's so hard to find nowadays, but I've found that I can get most of the groups on deepdiscountcd.com for under $13/CD which is pretty good for Swing music. I need to get back to taking swing dance lessons again.... I miss that.

To today's generation, swing's upbeat rhythms are still popular! we're dancing not only to the music of Benny Goodman and Louis Jordan, but also to the jump-jiving faster-paced retro bands such as the Big Bad Voodoo Daddies and the Brian Setzer Orchestra with their modern, updated stylings of Big Band era music. [/narrator mode]

my dance/theatre/performing arts group is doing a swing show now and I'm narrator...

I love swing music, though. I was on my high school's swing dance team (I KNOW! we have a SWING DANCE TEAM! aren't you jealous? huh?) since freshman year so I can do all those aerial tricks too. It's fun stuff.

one thing though: WHAT was their obsession with trains? I'll bet, off the top of your head, you can probably think of two swing songs that at least mention trains. we have, I believe, five train songs in our show. and a car song.

Me too!! Argh!

I took swing dancing classes THREE times (each time having at least 15 lessons) and I still can't do it. I just burn with jealousy when I see anybody who can.

My favorite group is by far stan kenton. Give them a listen. Not exactly the best to dance to all the time but really fun to listen to. There is an album called artisty in rythm thats good. Also they have a killer version of west side story if you like that.

I'm SO jealous that you have a swing dance team! That's awesome! I've been swing dancing since I was about 12, and more recently got into Lindy Hop and other things.

Indigo Swing rocks! I had the cd and somehow lost it, I'm so upset :-/ Sorry I can't recommend anything, I'm not all that music saavy.

kpickell, pick up the Brian Setzer Orchestra's Guitar Slinger cd for a refreshing, full blown blast of the past as well as some more modern styles. If you like that one then the first one (it just says "Brian Setzer Orchestra") will strike your fancy as well.

I really like Brian Setzer. He is a great guitar player, and a musician's musician. :)

Actually I do have that and a couple other Brian Setzer Orchestra CDs. He's not bad, but it's more of a rockabilly feel which I'm not as in to. Good to listen to though.

Never heard of Stan Kenton, but I'll look him up. Thanks.

It's been 3 years since I've been out swing dancing. I used to go all the time. Every Friday night when I lived down near Indianapolis. But I just joined a 8 week dance class to get myself back in the swing of things. It don't mean a thing if....
