I think most of them are in it just for the show-off and to be different from the rest. They really don't care about animals and the veggie cause. What is your opinion?
Maybe some truth to it. I think it's more common they do it for health. Celebrity is (IMO) all about image and (generally) the better you look, the better your image. If being plant centric gets them the body/skin they want, they're all in. If they can then leverage that to be seen supporting animal rights, all the better. But this is based on nothing other than my perception/opinion.
I think you're right about celebrities when you say "most". A few though will be genuine but it's not easy to tell those that are, from those that aren't. So I take 'em all with a pinch of salt.
Celebrities are just people like you and me. There's no way to lump them together and say they all do things for the same reasons. Some are very sincere about animal rights and some aren't.
Celebs are not like me because I'm not famous and never wanted to be famous. For most celebs, the need for fame is like the need for oxygen and so most will say whatever it takes to keep that oxygen flowing. For them, obscurity (leading perhaps to a reduction in income) is like a "mini-death".
As you rightly say:
Some are very sincere about animal rights and some aren't.
and since I'm not too fussed about trying to sort out the sincere from the insincere (they don't invite me to their parties anyway) I take them all with a pinch of salt. Sorry Ellen, Sir Paul...
I can give one celebrity example that I think genuinely care's a great deal about the welfare of all kinds of animals and that is Ricky Gervais . Some may do it to make themselves look good though but I believe he is the most sincere when it comes to raising awareness of all things animal rights
While there are a lot that seem to do it as a fad, there are many who really are very dedicated.
We had a thread here before on them.
I'll name those that come to mind:
Emily Deschanel
Ellen Degeneres
Porsche... you know^
Russel Brandt
Sarah Silverman
Peter Dinkalage (?)
Joaquan Phoenix
Steve-o
Pamela Anderson
Jared Leto
Woody Harrelson
I think it's good to have celebrities at least bringing it up as a topic for discussion, so whether they do it for a year or forever, I don't mind too much.
I wish they would consider what they're doing, when they say they're vegetarian or vegan. I think sometimes they don't have all of the facts, or they're using the term but not 'really' understanding what it means (just like with everyone else ). But, the problem is they're in the public eye and so their words reach a lot more people, so I would really like to see more of them being more mindful of what it means for them to be vegetarians or vegans.
At the same time, I think it helps to have vegetarian and vegan people in the public eye that we can reference. It just takes away a lot of that 'mystery' if people can match a face with the title, y'know?
