Ahh!!! About a week and a half ago I took the final plunge from vegetarian to vegan. And, it has been going really well!



Well, today after eating my cereal, I noticed it had honey in it! I swear I read that label 10 times!



I try to eat mostly whole fruits, grains, and nuts to avoid these missteps...



I am trying not to beat myself up over it, as I had every intention of eating a cereal with no animal products in it. But, I can't help but feel bad about messing up....



Has this happened to anyone else?

it happens to almost everyone. I've been vegan for a year and a half and it's happened to me on at least two occasions (one was honey in cereal, one was milk in a pot noodle). We just have to get back on our feet, brush ourselves off, and get on with life. Try not to worry too much about it, especially since you're new.

That sucks, well you gotta move on I guess. It was an accident, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.



I had something with red 40 in it yesterday, I thought I read somewhere that it wasn't vegan, but it is. So, that was close.

Once when I was a new vegetarian I sampled some bread at the health food store, only to find out it had pork in it.

They write those ingredients REAL REAL small sometimes, and there are often about a hundred million ingredients to read. It's easy to skip one.



Luckily I have my son at home who is also vegan, and he re-reads the labels on any new things I bring home. He has on occasion caught an animal ingredient which I have skipped...



Don't beat yourself up about this. It's not like you did it deliberately. Once I bought a shampoo from Lush at a time when I thought all Lush products were vegan. When the bottle was about half empty, I saw that there was YOGHURT in it!!!! (Why the heck would anyone want to wash their hair with YOGHURT!!!). I didn't make a big deal of it. I just chucked the bottle in the garbage bin, went back to Lush to complain (nicely) that they didn't make things clear enough which products were vegan or not. A few days later, they had put little green stickers on all the vegan products... and they gave me lots of free samples of their products to make up for their negligence.



Oh, and CONGRATS FOR GOING VEGAN!!!!!!!!!!!! VEGANS ROCK!!!!!!!!! WELCOME TO THE FAMILY.

Kristen, it's happened to me and I do read labels like crazy. But I have looked at something and then grabbed the wrong thing off the shelf by accident. Had a slight amount of dairy it it. Don't worry about it. It can be like dodging bullets in the grocery store trying to find only vegan products so an occasional hit may happen.

Try not to stress out over it! This has happened to me a few times (when I first became vegan I blondely didn't realise that Hot Chocolates were made with milk solids! Doh!).



It's weird how you freak out when you have eaten an animal product though eh? I do the same, after not consuming animal products for a while it suddenly seems like an odd concept to even want to or think about consuming them!

When I first went vegan I had a container of hard mints. I thought I read the label carefully, then when I offered one to another vegan, he said they had gelatin in them. Of course when I looked this time, there was gelatin on the label. I don't know how I didn't see it. I think it happens to everyone, especially in the beginning, when you're not expecting to see animal products in some items, or you don't exactly know what to look for. Who would think there would be gelatin in mints?!

Ick - I was holding a friend's coffee for her, along with mine, while she was trying on a dress. I drink my coffee black, she drinks hers with a lot of cream. You can see where this is going, but.... she came out, I gave her her coffee and took a big swig of mine... I have never liked cream in coffee, and to take a big mouthful of that where I could really taste it.....ugh. My poor friend was so distressed - I just laughed at her and told her not to worry, because stuff like this doesn't matter.---- that's my advice.

Yep - it happens. I switched from one Poppyseed dressing (Brianna's) to another for the lower calories and thought I had read the ingredients thoroughly. But no. After using about 1/3 of the bottle, I reread the ingredients to find sour cream way down on the list. Ugh. I felt quite dumb.

It happens more often than not. For example, tonight I accidentally grabbed the spoon my mom used on fish (there was nothing on it, it was wiped clean), and then I put it in my food. It was too late when I realized my spoon was on the other side of the stove. I know it doesn't seem like a lot, but it's something that freaked me out for a moment.

There will be MANY people here who swear they have never EVER messed up, not once in a zillion years of being pure, hardcore, true-blue vegan. Don't let 'em fool ya (or get you down), most all of us here have "messed up" in one way or another; whether we know it, or acknowledge it, or not...

Personally, I have no problem with honey (not that I go out of my way to eat it). But I certainly don't feel bad when I do. I've been vegan 17 years (in my mind anyway - I guess not according to the vegan society or whoever thinks they made up the definition). I find that its mostly newer vegans who beat themselves up over every little thing. No worries.

I don't see it in this thread, and I haven't seen it in general. Find some specific examples to back up your point, since according to you this attitude is so very common. I think that you have a case that you're continually trying to prove against some vegans, and it's extremely divisive and overblown.

To the OP, reading all of those food packages can make your eyes cross sometimes and it can be very easy to miss an ingredient. The boy and I do it often enough. And we are both adamant label readers. But sometimes things **** up, you know? You didn't intend to eat non-vegan and no need to beat yourself up over an oversight. My most recent faux pas a few months ago was buying non-vegan cheese. I was so excited to see a new brand of cheese that I completely forgot to look at the ingredients. I just assumed it was vegan because I was looking for vegan cheese (durr). So I just grabbed the almond cheese version and bought additional ingredients to make vegan pizza for the boy because he misses pizza (and cheese) a lot. When the boy got home, I announced happily what we were to have for dinner and as he was checking out the [unopened] cheese package he said "uhoh". It had casein in it. So, we ate dinner sans cheese and I returned it the next day. I felt so stupid, but I got over it.



Anyway, I have tons of stories like that one, like how long it took me to realize that Junior Mints had gelatin in them. D'oh! It's crazy how much we [ab]use animals for food products!

lol, I did this (well, actually, I end up doing it ALL THE TIME, but this time was the silliest to me) with a Lightlife tofu, soy bacon, and soy cheese wrap. WHO THE HELL PUTS CASEIN IN SOMETHING LIKE THAT??? I mean, who are they marketing it to? Not vegans, not LO's, and definitely not omni's! Just plain silly if you ask me. That's a lot of money for them to spend when no one's going to pay $3 to eat something they could make or buy for cheaper, lol.



Soy cheese is the sneakiest. Seems like casein is in everything "vegan", sigh. What's the point?

Yesterday I purchased at the deli Whole Foods vegan Potstickers filled with veggies.

While I was eating them, one of them had a weird flavor. I checked it with my wife and it had chicken!!!!!!



The chicken Potstickers were very close to the vegan ones, and they are exactly the same!!!!!! It was so yucky!!!!!!!! It could not be other than flesh!!!

At least, it was a small bite... I was thinking in going to Whole Foods and return the other 75% of the chicken Potsticker....



They should watch out more with that... they have lots of vegan customers...

About two days into my diet, I ate a big bite of refried beans. Then, I thought, better read the ingredients just to make sure, and sure enough, there was LARD in them. Yech. Who puts lard in beans?? So now, I read every label, always. Never assume anything.

(OK, Taco Bell doesn't, but I don't consider them a "restaurant".)

As AHIMSA said, just about all of Latin America.



ANY time you see refried beans, whether in a can or on a menu, it's VERY likely they are made with lard.



Even if you trust the restaurant, it doesn't hurt to ask again, because if a new cook or owner takes over, chances are they will start making their refritos frijoles the "traditional way".

What irritates me more than anything is when I SWEAR I've read the label of some product a million times to check for its veganness, and I've been eating it for years, when SUDDENLY it says online that it has gelatin in it or something like that. *Grrrr* This has happened with Starbursts, Mentos (in which case it doesn't even LIST that there is gelatin in them on many of the wrappers!), Skittles, etc. *Sigh*



I think it's best to consider how your one accidentally-consumed (and purchased) product compares to the thousands of dairy, milk, and meat products most families/people eat yearly, if not monthly. We've all got the best intentions, eh?



Still... I went into, like, a fetal position with guilt and remorse when (still being a vegetarian) I realized that about half the cheese I ate had baby cow rennet in it... The horror... the horror... lol

Yeah, I was just surprised. I really didn't know that it was made with lard. But, I found a brand at my health food store that uses no lard or animal products.

I messed up today by eating half a packet of Salt n Vinegar Snack-a-Jacks...



It had never occured to me that they contained lactose from milk made with animal rennet and I was looking at the back of the packet while eating them and realised. I stopped eating at that point!

I've been vegan for years, and it finally happen to me.



This (formerly) vegan faux chicken that I get every few months. I got done eating it, and read the package again to remind myself if it was made of seitan or soy, and they've added WHEY PROTEIN to the list of ingredients.



I was so mad. It's all "vegetarians'" fault, with their loose definitions and crazy ways of bending the rules of health and compassion for their personal convenience. They'll kill some animals, but not all animals. They'll make some animals suffer, but complain about others. Psychos.



I understand only two kinds of people. People who will kill and eat everything, including humans. And vegans. Anything else requires a bit of insanity and hypocrisy.



Lacto/Ovo's need straight jackets. They're the reason why mix ups like this happen, and the reason why vegans (true vegetarians) have such a tough time dealing with stereotypes applied to us all by omnivores. "I heard y'all eat cheese and wear leather shoes. Explain that!" "Well, I don't. There are some people who call themselves vegetarian, but aren't. It's a trendy thing for them to do. They're like if Hitler called himself a humanitarian because he spared Aryans."
