To lighten things... what is everyones fave cruelty free, vegan cosmetics/toiletries?
I use lush as it is not animal tested, vegan products are clearly labelled and they support anti animal testing and fair trades, and have minimal packaging But maaan are they expensive. I have to have their aramatico deo, it has zero packaging and works! And the soild shampoo bars are incredible.
How about you my fellow veggies?
Anything in your bathroom you cant live without that is vegan and spares animals?
Shampoo, shower gel, and toothpaste, I use Green Beaver. Haven't tried other brands.
Deodorant, I use Lafes.
Moisturizing cream, I use Aubrey. Although I've only used it twice, since I forget to use it.
Make up: BareMinerals foundation, synthetic brushes, everything else from 100% pure.
Hair care: shampoo and conditioner from Pureology and hair spray from Paul Mitchell.
Skin care: Dermalogica face wash and Pai skincare for moisturizer.
Damn, that's much. I need to simplify my regime. Who needs all this stuff?? I know that I sometimes buy vegan products from non vegan companies, but I'm getting closer everytime I need something replaced.
EDIT: Oh, and seriously. Buy a menstrual cup. Not a "vegan" advice but easier on the body and the environment (and therefore the animals too). My periods are so much easier now!
I'm transitioning so not quite there yet but I've found vegan solid shampoo bars, inexpensive shower gel from Aldi, some Barry M vegan cosmetics and a crystal deo from Holland and barrett. I only use olive oil on my skin to cleanse and moisturise, so inexpensive and very healthy for my skin.
Interesting that everyone is posting from around the world about what they use. How awesome is that! I use Kirks Castile soap for bar soap. I make my own shampoo with tea tree oil, lavender oil, vinegar, and water for my hair but sometimes get lazy and just buy and use Dr. Bronners liquid soaps. I use that soap for many cleaning purposes, along with lemon juice and vinegar. For toothpaste I use Kiss My Face. They make sunblock also, though I rarely use it. I love pure essential oils and use them for pain (such as arnica), stimulation and digestive stuff (peppermint oil), sleep aids (valerian root) etc. I use Seventh Generation for dish soap and laundry detergent (also make my own). Other than those I can't think of anything else. I don't wear makeup or perfumes or any of that. I stopped using hair sprays and gels and all that for my hair almost four years ago. I have very short hair that is so easy to care for (except I have to have it trimmed monthly).
I use soap from Chagrin Valley soap and salve (online) and salt crystal deodorant. We use toothpaste from the Natural Dentist. Sunblock from Purple Prairie Botanicals and moisturizer from Keys. Oh, floss from Radius (I get the cranberry flavor.) I don't usually wear makeup, but I do have some from various vegan etsy shops for when I feel like wearing it.
I love Lush! I agree they're expensive, but everything smells so good! :'( I mostly use their shampoo bars and their mascara. Best mascara ever, in my opinion!
My deodorant is Earthwise. My toothpaste is Earthpaste. And my handsoaps are Soapworks, a family-owned business based in Toronto.
I like their hair stuff. I've got some of the R and B curly hair stuff in right now and I like their stick perfumes.
I LOVE Nature's Organic/Organic Care/Earth One. I use a lot of their products. I haven't shampooed my hair for about 2 years now, but I use their conditioners and love it. Their face stuff isn't too bad in a pinch. But they also have dishwashing tablets and hand sanitisers and a whole heap of stuff. I love them!
Face care products- Sukin all the way. Though, I've been known to indulge in some Natio from time to time, especially for their sunscreen.
Makeup- Australis, E.L.F (only just got it here in Australia, from what I can see). I do love LUSH's lip stains though, they're pretty much the only thing I could find that doesn't use cochineal for red!
Nail Polish- Manic Panic. So far everything else seems to use cochineal, though I think some of the Australis range are okay too.
Hair- Manic Panic. It rubs off on my sheets. But the colours are so awesome! I'm going to try some Delorenzo stuff soon. I really hope it works! I've heard good things but haven't been able to try it yet.
Oh, I should mention, Australis aren't 'vegan'. They're cruelty-free though and they label the vegan stuff on their website, which just makes it so much easier!
This is probably super-ignorant, but is this website intended for people in the UK? I'm in NYC and the products I use are distinctly American, but it seems everyone else here is from Europe. Is this right?
At any rate, for makeup, definitely check out ELF. So inexpensive and all vegan. Neutrogena Naturals are vegan, and I use their moisturizer. Salma Hayak now has a vegan line of body products, including nail polish, lotions, shampoos...
I noticed more American products than U.K ones being talked about (I'm Australian though, so very little of that matters anyway because we don't seem to get much of either here, at least in the way of Cruelty Free/Vegan).
I use Sukin too. I have really sensitive skin and a fragrance sensitivity (yup, I am a special snowflake) and their face wash is one of the few that doesn't peel off the skin around my nose. I also love the Lime Crime Velveteen lip stains. They're awesome. The packaging is great and they don't budge (unless I stuff my face with greasy hot chips or something oily like that).
I'm having trouble finding vegan shampoo/conditioner in Oz that doesn't set off my sensitivities. The only shampoo that's ever worked consistently for me is head and shoulders. Everything else starts causing my scalp to react after a couple of weeks. I tried soap nuts but my hair went really manky. I've been looking at Dr Bronners, any feedback for that?
Have you given Organic Care/Nature's Organics a go? I've found them at Coles and Woolies, I seem to be okay with them and I've had sensitive skin in the past.
Sukin have some shampoos and conditioners too. They were okay, I didn't really like them 'that' much, but they were good for what I needed at the time. I've heard good stuff about Bronners, but haven't used it myself. Sorry!
I basically live in Superdrug as their own brand products are not tested on animals, clearly state that they are suitable for vegetarians and vegans and often display the leaping bunny logo. I also really like Lush, I'm obsessed with their bath bombs. Until recently I bought my perfumes and some of my make-up in the Body shop but I wasn't aware that people were boycotting it because their profits go to l'oreal (the company that owns the body shop) who still test on animals. So even thought the Body shop's policy say's they don't test on animals, the money they make go to products that are (in the brand name of l'oreal). When I use up my body shop products I will be replacing them with some new found brands that I still need to research. Does anyone have any perfume recommendations?
I have recently started trying out some Faith in Nature products too. Does anyone else use this brand? how are you finding it?
We have Faith in Nature hand soap and body wash. I do enjoy them and they are more soapy than some other vegan brands I've tried. My boyfriend (omni) uses it too.
I have a really hard time finding a deodorant that works for me. I tried crystal ones, one with tea tree oil ffom a brand called Dr... something (can't remember) and also from Urtekram. I still smell like sweat at the end of the day! They're simple not as good as the non vegan ones. Right now I don't use any ... which bothers me.
I use Urban Decay cosmetics (not all of their products are vegan, but they mark which ones are), kind of pricey but really good quality. I also use Ion hair care products, which are available at Sally Beauty Supply (like UD, they don't test on animals and they mark which of their products are vegan). I have really dry skin, and their products designed for dry and damaged hair don't irritate my scalp. I've been playing around with body washes and haven't found one I really like yet - I like trying new products though, so that's ok. I also haven't found a vegan lotion that works for me, which is more frustrating because of my extremely dry skin. I love coconut oil, but I've developed a slight allergy to it so can't use it anymore.
Oh, I'm REALLY allergic to jojoba oil. My sister got a couple free body washes and hair products from me before I figured that out. It seems like that stuff is in EVERYTHING too, even stuff marketed as hypoallergenic (I'm guessing it's not a common allergen).
I use argan oil for pretty much everything it can be used for - makeup remover, face moisturizer, leave in conditioner. At $8 for a tiny bottle, it seems really expensive but all it takes are a couple drops so one bottle lasts a long time. It's actually cheaper for me than buying all the products I replaced with it.
Same here and the only foundation I've tried that matches my skin. I think you were the one that got me into them. Have received many compliments since. And do they still offer free samples of the foundations/bases? That was wonderful for finding my match.
For much of my other makeup, I tend to buy ELF (eyes lips face) because they're vegan and cheap. However when buying online, I forgot to check the box saying I didn't want any free magazines once and now the free magazines won't stop. :| I give them to my brother's girlfriend for now but I ought to call ELF because I do not want them in the first place.
I am really confused about 'Cruelty-free' subsidiaries such as the Body shop and Urban decay (who are also owned by L'oreal). I have just found out that Superdrug are seen as one too, I'm assuming it's because of the owners or the fact that they also sell non cruelty-free products as well as their own cruelty-free brand. Where do you draw the line? most of the products I own are Superdrug I have gathered my information from Naturewatch.org what are eveyones views on this topic?
I don't buy products from 'Cruelty Free' companies that are owned by companies that test (if I can help it). My idea behind doing it that way, is that I don't want those companies to get my money at all. I'd rather spend maybe a little extra on a company that is trying to be completely cruelty free with their products, than one that's just owned by a company that tests on animals. I figure, I buy enough products that I don't have a say whether animals should be tested (like medications). With something like cosmetics, I have a say and I can find alternatives.
But really, if one of my friends is buying a product that's cruelty free, even if it's owned by a big company that tests, I still congratulate them on it. It's a good start.
The Body Shop in Australia aren't owned by L'Oreal (I think, if you're in Aus. please check it out for yourself!).
oooh, forgot about this stuff - http://inika.com.au/natural-mineral-foundation-all-shades . It's awesome. According to their About and Commitment pages all of the products are vegan and certified as such by the UK Vegan Society. I haven't used any of their other make up.
Moreover be wary of any company that imports stock to china as by law those cosmetics have to be tested on animals.
This did apply to all cosmetics domestic or foreign but now only imported (this only changed in July I think). So your cosmetics may be cruelty free but the company allow animal testing on their behalf.
Urban decay fell foul of this and had to pull out of their china expansion.
I make everything. My sister and I make soap, so that is covered. I grate a bar of pure castile (olive oil soap) and make it into liquid soap and add peppermint oil. I use this as shampoo and also as toothpaste (mixed with baking soda).
Grapeseed oil, cornstarch, baking soda, and essential oils makes a great deodorant (most people use coconut oil, but my skin is sensitive to it).
Actually, my coconut sensitivity led to all of this. So many shampoos and shampoo bars have coconut in them so I set out to try and make my own. Turned out the pure olive oil soap worked the best on my hair and scalp. Then I realized soap making was fun .
I've been buying most of my vegan beauty items and fragrance off etsy. So far my favourites have been Siberie Perfumes and Botanika Beauty. Botanika gives the option of candelilla wax in their products. My favourite scents from Siberie Perfumes has been Boleyn, Angelica and Odette.
I am very happy with Arbonne for cosmetics, and skincare. I have started using some of their nutrition products as well. I am excited to see so many varied answers on this board. Great topic. Thanks for all the different ideas/companies/products.
yessss, i was just coming on here to find out what people have heard about this company. My friend showed me a bunch of their products and I absolutely love the fact that it's vegan. I dislike Lush [sorry to all the lush lovers here]. I don't feel like the experience is great whereas the products I've tried with Arbonne have been so great.
hey guys I just made a new channel to help spread the animal love I do vegan food reviews and stuff (plan to do a ton) and use only cruelty free makeup please help me out I really want to help spread the word that animals are not ours to abuse and cosmetics do NOT need to be tested on animals thank you! www.youtube.com/roarwoofwoof
