I know there is vegan carmel, so I doubt that it IS vegan, but I was wondering why?  Is there milk in it?  I read that starbucks carmel syrup (but not drizzle) is vegan. is all carmel syrup vegan? :O  if i buy it in the store, i guess i should simple read the label eh? ;)

I believe there is butter in conventional caramel.

But I could be wrong.

You could probably google caramel recipes and see what makes it nonvegan :-)

Caramel is just sugar that's been melted. So caramel sauce or syrup may easily be vegan. But caramel candies usually have cream in them. And caramel flavored things may have milk or eggs in them.

On top of that, one of the commonly used sugars for caramel and caramel color is lactose as it is cheap and has few uses (I doubt it tastes very good as a sugar). At least this something that I read a year ago, and I have thus been unable to confirm what I had read. (also, can't find the site I saw it on either). *shrugs*

Okay, does anyone have a good vegan caramel recipe?

I tried one last Halloween using soymilk and it was a disaster!

I'd like a thick sauce for apple dipping.

I accidentally not on purpose veganized this recipe, using sucanat, nut cream, and Earth Balance.

This one looks good - though a little drippy - it's sticking to the apples though -
