I've wanted to dye my hair for the first time, but I don't know where to begin, especially with finding the right dyes. I love bothe natural and unnatural colors.

I have very dark brown hair so it would require me to bleach it if I want a lighter color.

Does anyone have any brands they can recommend?

Whatever color you choose, don't bleach your hair. That is THE WORST thing you could ever put your hair through, at least if you're planning to dye the whole hair.

I used manic panic back in the day when I dyed my hair every color of the rainbow. They claim to be all-vegan, and I'm pretty sure they make a bleach product in addition to the funky colors.

You're gonna make me puke my pants.

It's really not that big of a deal. It might dry your hair out after excessive use, but it'll recover. I've done it a billion times.

My paranoia of damage using bleach is what had kept me from wanting to use it. But I've searched about it and many say as long as I don't bleach over and over my hair shouldn't get brittle or anything.

I have dark hair also. I've always had to bleach twice to get it blonde enough to soak up any VERY light colors, like yellow or pink. I can't even count how many times I've bleached my hair. Yeah, it'll probably get dry. But it'll grow back. My hair is its natural color and doing just fine now.

when i was wearing mine bleached a few years ago i used special effects. its cool stuff. my hair is jet black & so not that easy to bleach with a good result & it made it almost white after i bombed it a few times. it was that pale it used to glow under black light. in clubs, i used to get heaps of people asking what i had on my hair & wanting to touch it
yeah, bleaching fries the **** outta ya hair but i was wearing it short & spikey back then so the slight stiffness caused by the damage helped to hold the style in place. you can use intense conditioning treatments to minimise the fallout anyway. or just olive oil will do the same thing.

There's a product called "Last Call" that totally fixes your hair after bleaching it, but I have no idea if it's vegan. I'm sure there's probably a vegan version of something similar, if not.

Don't mean to discourage, but I wish I had never dyed my hair. It still hasn't recovered though it's been a year or two. Doesn't have the same feel or shine. :c

I've used Manic, NRage and Special Effects. All of them are good. NRage wasn't as long lasting on my hair as the others though.

I used to bleach my hair to dye it bright unnatural colours, mainly pink. I don't regret it, since I had awesome looking hair for a few years, but its pretty annoying now I have to make it a natural colour for work. It will NOT hold dye on the bleached parts any more. I mean I dyed my hair a few weeks ago, and within a week it was quite faded on the bleached bits! Now its like, 3 toned. Dark reddish brown on the roots, light reddish brown where the past dye was, and strawberry blonde on the tips where the bleach is.

So if you want to use bleach, be prepared to have to re-dye it a lot, keep up the bleached look, or look like a scruff like me. haha. My hair isnt that damaged, and still shines! Its not poker straight and it used to be, haha oops. I think the fact that I dont blow dry or straighten it helps a lot though in keeping it un-fried.

Also, a lot of permenant dyes have lightener built in anyway, so you wouldn't nessecarily need to bleach it. My hair is naturally almost black, and I didnt start bleaching it til I wanted to go neon pink/red. Dark reds, gingers, purples should be fine over your natural colour.

Anywaaay, I have no brand suggestions since I do believe I'm in a different country. I used to like Special Effects and ordered it from the US, here's a good website showing their colours on people with bleached/unbleached hair:

It is one of the worst procedures that you can do on your hair. And the damage depends on the thickness of your hair threads, for example mines are thin so I'm more screw than people who have thick hair threads.

Yeh, and any damage I've done to my hair has never been permanent.

And that depends on what your activities are, if you are a marketing manager or a sales person is a must that you have nice hair, so the damage can be temporary but the consequences can be permanent. Or maybe you don't need to work to worry about your hair, if you care about your image (and I'm sure most veg*n do) why would you want to have ugly hair? Hair is the frame of the face

It's ok to experiment with your hair, I have A LOT, short, long, curly, straigh, wavy (current), brown, blonde, green, red, Rogue look but I will never recommend bleaching, why put your hair through it if there are so many other options? Like using a higher volume of peroxide, for example.

Rogue:

Actually I'd love to dye my hair that way again, maybe I will

I know that's Sookie Stackhouse, I'm a trubie, my question is how do you know she bleaches instead of only dying?

Looks like a high lift base color with heavy bleach highlighting to me. On her. I have been a hairdresser for like 6 years.

I work with dementia patients and heroin addicts (not at the same time fortunately ), so I can pretty much do what I want with my hair because the condition it's in at any given time doesn't really show up on those people's lists of things to give a **** about.

Thanks so much for everything everyone!

As far as my hair goes, I keep it very short, so if my hair ever does get damaged, I'll just chop it all down to a boy cut. the longest piece of hair i currently have on my head is prolly only 4 inches, and I chop it down every couple of months when it gets below my jaw.

I used to have super long hair [so long that I donated 12 inches of it, and still had a shoulder length haircut], but I've found short hair is easy to manage for a lazy person like me.

Anyway, THANKS A LOT, EVERYONE HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL!
