I recently went vegan so I'm trying to figure out all the substitutions I like. I used to like making air pop popcorn with melted butter. I tried it last night with melted earth balance and it was nasty. Does anyone know of any other substitutions that would be butter-like?

I used to use hotsauce, or I would do salt and vinegar.

Nutritional yeast! It's delicious sprinkled over popcorn.

Nutritional yeast is great on popcorn! It was one of my first "vegan" buys. It took me a while to like it on other things, but I liked it popcorn right away! So do my kids. You can buy in it in a natural or health food store, mine is in refrigerated containers sold by weight. Lots of B vitamins, Red Star most popular brand.
If you're making air popped you should try an olive oil mister.

You didn't like it with earth balance? I love it that way. You could use a little hot sauce if you're into spicy.

Me and my (non-veg!) friends like it with oil (like canola) and salt

I've heard most movie theater "butter" is vegan. I think it's some type of vegetable oil. Not sure if you can buy it like that though.

'Misto' sprayer with olive oil in it. Then maybe some nutritional yeast, or not as you like. But (light) olive oil is great on popcorn!

Extra virgin olive oil or virgin coconut oil would probably be good. Then you could add some herbs/spices to your liking as well.

I tried that butter oil before and was not impressed. I know the OP said she didn't like Earth Balance, but Earth Balance is much better tasting to me.

Corn oil is often described as 'buttery' so maybe that?

Ooh interesting...my mom just grabbed some no-butter, microwaveable kettle corn for me and the BF and got some spray olive oil to go with it. I'm intrigued.

I used to have a 'Misto' before it broke. You fill it with the oil of your choice... canola, olive.... then pump it a few times and it pressurizes the can so you can spray it like an aerosol. And it's reusable. I'd spray that on the popcorn, then dust everything with some 'flavored powder'. Usually nutritional yeast (which is different than brewers yeast, which is nasty), paprika, salt and onion powder. It has a cheezy kind of flavor. Cinnamon sugar was okay too. Melted Earth Balance plus agave nectar is good.

I've used this: http://www.veganstore.com/joy-soy-in...age_1/435.html since I think nutritional yeast on popcorn (or anything else for that matter) tastes like used cat litter.

Not gonna ask how you'd know that flavor.

Just don't forget to de-pressurize your misto! I didn't with the first one I had, this one I make to unscrew the top when I'm done. Even when it stops spraying there's still pressure in the can.

I don't think coconut oil will work with a misto - it's solid at room temp.
