Marinated Tofu Sandwich by http://www.vegcooking.com

Category: Sandwiches/Burgers

This recipe is suitable for a: vegetarian/vegan diet.

Ingredients:

-----------------------------------------------------

1 lb. extra-firm tofu

1 cup barbecue sauce (or sweet and sour sauce/ spicy salsa/ or olive oil with your favourite seasoning)

4 whole wheat sandwich rolls

Sautéed onions, diced bell peppers, etc.

Instructions:

-----------------------------------------------------

Drain the tofu and cut it in half horizontally to make two pieces. Wrap the tofu in a clean towel, carefully press it between two baking sheets with a small weight on top to remove excess water (dont crush the tofu), and refrigerate for an hour or more. Unwrap the tofu and place in a shallow baking dish. Spoon 1/2 cup of barbecue sauce over the tofu, cover the baking dish and let the tofu marinate in the fridge for at least several hours. The longer the tofu marinates (up to 5 days) the more flavourful it will be.

Place the marinated tofu on a lightly oiled baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 1 hour. Slice the sandwich rolls open, cut the tofu into thin slices, and divide it among the rolls. Mix the sautéed onions, bell peppers, etc., with the remaining barbecue sauce and spoon over the sandwiches.

This is an old thread but it sounds yummy. I never think to put tofu in a sandwich.

Yep, I'm a newbie digging around all the old posts. Found a good one it seems

I often bake slices of tofu with BBQ sauce on them, but this sounds like a superior method!

I was just wondering recently if I could use tofu in a sandwich - I'm thinking something BLT-ish.

I occasionally make fries, and when I do take the time to heat up a wok-full of peanut oil, I also fry up a little tofu for 'cold-cuts' on sandwiches.

I just drain the (firm) tofu for an hour or so (just dump the water, then stand it on its end in the container, dumping the water every 20 minutes or so).

Then slice it about 1/4" thin. Put it in the hot oil for a few minutes, then into the fridge to be put on sandwichs.

I used to make tofu bacon similar to this recipe. Makes a great sandwich:

The link works, you just need to add the closing parenthesis in the URL.
