Okay, my husband's having problems with his computer. He thinks he's fried the CPU or the video card (he's leaning more towards the CPU). Has anyone fried their video card or CPU? What were the symptoms?
This is a computer that he built himself and bought the parts online, so it's not a simple matter of calling the maker. We'd appreciate any help.
When he turns it on, the power LED flashes constantly, it will not POST, cannot access BIOS, no beeping, it just does nothing and stops, no display on the screen. We can't find anything in the manual about it.
The best thing to do is take all the parts out including ram and video card etc and put them back one by one. You can tell some by the beeps if its the video card. I am not a huge expert but thats usually what people do when they have to diagnose...
Since it can't do anything... I'd almost say the processor was installed incorrectly, or it's bad. Although the system board could've went out... but if it did work at one time, and now doesn't that'd lean more towards something went out (like processor/systemboard). Normally, if a videocard is "out" you just won't see anything.
It is also possible that something came un-seated (make sure the memory, processor, cards, etc are all firmly seated in place).
I think that it should be the video card. I fried a CPU twice, and both times the power-on led of the computer only flashed once. If the led flashes constantly, it should be something else, I guess.
Dead CPU, Mobo, or he's shorted the Mobo out to the case by putting a standoff somewhere where there isn't a screwhole. Post make and model of the CPU, Motherboard, Case and Memory and I should be able to hit the nail on the head.
Check to make sure everything is seated correctly.
Also, on some motherboards (rare now?) the motherboard needs two power connectors. High end video cards (common now?) also tend to require a seperate power connector.
For your reference, a computer requires a power supply, a motherboard, memory and CPU to power up. A video card is usually helpful (but not strictly needed). Test it with all of the above (including video card) but with all other cards and drives disconnected.
We were about to come to these suggestions this morning to work it out and try his computer again, and he randomly thought he should take out the new memory stick and try it with the old one. Lo and behold...it worked. I have no idea. It's been in the computer for a few days, too. Anyway, everything seems to be fine now.
