Problem computer

I was wondering if anyone could help.

Our computer is only a year old and has windows 98 on it. Well with the internet sometimes it'll work, sometimes not. I'll go into detail:

We have had problems with virus or worms or something and we have a PC cillion from the motherboard which seemed to help, then the internet got worse so I downloaded a virus killer. I think we have a few 'perminant resedents living in here as none of those killers can distroy them. So after the internet starts freezing, we pressed cult, alt, delete and internet explorer is not responding, so end task. But today (it's been going for a few days) it'll freeze within a couple of minutes of going online, we are missing a file called 'bridge.lmp' or something along those lines, and another which has strange forign language and english. But when we end task we can't get back online as the icon won't load it up, even right clicking it and opening it. So we start to restart it and the pop up which says this programm is not responding 'end task' twice and then it restarts and works, sometimes we can't open it by double clicking (no matter how long we wait) so it will open by right clicking it.

So a day ago we brought norton internet security and my brother installed it but claimed it stopped us going online as every site says cannot find or cannot display page. I told him this sometimes happens because I have gone online and it says that but I just wait and click on everything in our favourites bar, but he uninstalled it.

He tried to install it again but a warning came up (I think it was the one that says illegal activity or something or other, that's what our internet used to do and then a grey box would appear first andask if we would like to ingore or end task.

Sorry I'm alittle vegue, but any help would be much appreicative. I'm going to try and install that virus killer again.

I would also suggest what Dr. Schmeebis did, and more...

1. Backup any data you don't want to lose, scan it for any virus.

2. Format your hard drive

3. Install Windows XP (or any other up-to-date OS)

4. Do not use Outlook or Outlook Express, unless you disable html and scripts - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2001/12...ook_available/.

5. Do not use Internet Explorer. Use Mozilla or Opera (free and NO popups!).

6. Install AVG antivirus from http://www.grisoft.com (free)

7. Install Kerio Personal Firewall http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_download.html (also free), when you set this up block Internet Explorer from accessing anything.

8. Install and run XP AntiSpy from http://www.xp-antispy.org/ (again free)

me too. I didn't know he was really banned though. I thought he just gave himself the tagline "Banned" because I couldn't find any thread where he was banned.

ETA: you're right though, his name isn't on the Member List anymore, so I guess he was banned. I should have checked that first.

I've been in search of that for ages, only I've not actually been doing much searching, but I did once find a German equivalent of this anti-spy program,

not that I am German but I wonder if I could still use it and understand it.

I will try to find the link in my faves before long to show you, ok pgh man!?

Hi Sola.... I have XP if you wanna take note. Not an expert though by ANY

means.

Bye SwampGas??..... hmmm.... Comparison?... I think give Peebs some credit,

and anyway I don't know what Swampgas was supposta have done out of line apart from a tagline I guess, I don't know.
