Google has announced a new privacy policy applicable to all people with a Google Account starting today, March 1, 2012.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss this new policy and what, if anything, to do about it.

Wired has an article about it here:

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has instructions on removing your Google search history from your account.

You can visit Googles Data Liberation Front website for instructions in exporting data out of Google products.

I know very little about this, except this is something I should have looked into a month ago.

Your comments are welcome.

EU justice chief warns Google over 'sneaking' citizens' privacy away

"Viviane Reding says there are 'doubts' over legality of internet giant's move as French authorities open EU-wide investigation

The European commissioner of justice, Viviane Reding, has delivered a stinging rebuke to Google over changes to its privacy policy, warning that "we aren't playing games here" and pointing out that the obligation to protect personal data forms a part of European treaties."

I guess I should have clarified that I was primarily interested in what people in the United States/North America can or should do about the Google change in policy.

The European Union legal reaction is interesting, but the usual take on it is that Google might have to modify its policies in Europe, but those European rules will not affect Google's policies in the US or anywhere outside the EU.
