So it's my mother's 60th Surprise Birthday party tomorrow.
The family have each been asked to cook and bring a dish.
My sister is doing chili con carne. My cousin meatballs. My brother lasagne.
I am stumped - I need to find a vegan dish that's okay cooked in advance, and will be eaten by omnis as well as me!
It's terrible - mum has been going on for a while about how 60 is a 'big birthday', and she said she wanted something 'special' as a present that she can keep forever.
....EVERYONE is buying jewelry! I'm stuck as to what to get that is special and not expensive (I don't want to spend more than the equivalent of..er..about 60 GBP or 100 dollars as I'm only working part time at the moment).
So please, any suggestions as to food and/or present are greatly, greatly, greatly appreciated!
Pasta salad? Cottage Pie made with lentils? Rice dish?
And don't stress about the money, I'm sure your Mom will understand if you can't afford an expensive gift. It's very rude to expect people to buy gifts out of their budget.
You should consider making her something yourself.
Maybe a scrapbook or little picture book with quotes/notes.
It would be relatively cheap to get the materials, I imagine, and you can customize it how ever you want it. I think it would mean a lot to her to know that you put in time to a gift rather than money, and that would definitely be something she could keep forever.
With a menu like that, any health concious person will appreciate a green salad or fruit salad. Neither are scary or weird and both can keep pretty well. Personally, I'd probably bring two dishes: one side dish that everyone will eat and then another protein for me and whoever else doesn't eat animals. For example, lentil chili and a large green salad. Or three bean salad and a fruit salad. Or BBQ tofu and mixed steamed veggies.
As for a memoral gift, perhaps one of these would work: a heartfelt poem, a special photo that you framed, a simple piece of elegant jewelry that has special meaning, tickets to a special show, anything engraved with her name and the date.
