Taco Bell is making history by becoming the first fast-food chain to introduce a menu certified by the American Vegetarian Association (AVA). The taco purveyor's new menu includes 13 vegetarian offerings, and according to a press release, "Customers can also hack the menu" to create customized vegan meals with any of the 26 AVA-certified vegan ingredients (which include guacamole, potatoes, premium Latin rice, and chunky salsa). The announcement is more evidence that fast-food restaurants unwilling to evolve with customer demand will see a decrease in sales, while eateries adopting fresher, healthier, often veg-friendly options are finding success. "At Taco Bell, vegetarians are not an afterthought," Brian Niccol, CEO of Taco Bell Corp, said. "We're proud to treat meat lovers and vegetarians equally-equally delicious, equally craveable, and equally affordable."
It might not seem like it but this is a huge sign of progress! The more easily available and affordable vegetarian food is the more people will eat it. Go Taco Bell! :vebo:
I have to say this is the first news in a long time that has genuinely shocked me. Taco bell being the FF chain to pioneer a veg menu. Who would've thunk it! I'm not fond of promoting junk food, but I think the more mainstream it becomes and the more easy it is to obtain, the more people will realize it IS delicious and may want to learn more.
They have had the fresco vegan options for some time.
When my son was in high school, he was really glad there was a fast food place he could go to with his friends and actually be able to eat something besides fries. Plus Taco Bell is so cheap, it was easy to steer the omnis away from mcdonalds and toward Taco Bell.
I take it you only shop at grocery stores that sell all vegan food and other products? I imagine the rows upon rows of ground beef being sold in grocery stores too. I just avoid that aisle....
Taco Bell has been veg friendly for a very long time. It is nice that they have a vegetarian menu, although if you actually look at the menu it's the same stuff I've always gotten -- bean burrito, 7-layer burrito, etc. None of their newer items. A step in the right direction, nonetheless. It looks like they have done away with "fresco style" which made it easier to order items without the cheese (they would replace the cheese with pico de gallo).
I often eat at Taco Bell on road trips. I've always found it to be one of the more veg-friendly fast food places. I haven't gone there since transitioning to veganism, though.
It's just that we live in such a widely omnivore world, so any time we can chip away at that and bring plant based meals and other products to the mainstream in some way I celebrate it.
Bravo, Taco Bell! Now if they'd just add faux meat products so we don't have to have stripped down, 'light' versions of products. I'd like tacos or burritos or taco salads, etc., made with faux meat products, such as my favorite, Morningstar Farms Crumbles, to replace the meat; as it is now, they'll LEAVE OUT the meat and/or replace it with beans. That's not the same thing.
Finally, something else I can order other than a regular bean burrito or triple layer nachos.
