Hi there I'm going to a party tomorrow night, and I've decided to attempt making falafel (A while back it seemed I couldn't even have success with a packet job!), and I was wondering what kind of sauces people here use when they make it. I've had plain yoghurt with it before at a restaurant (I'm lacto-ovo vegetarian, and will be the only one at the party, so milk based product suggestions are fine) and I thought maybe a salsa would go with it? Any advice would be appeciated, as I'm really unsure of what to put with the falafel patties.

Thanks

Hummus goes well with it. I like tahini, but some folks may not like tahini if they are not used to it. You can even dip it in Annie's "goddess" dressing. I have also had falafel with hot sauce. Also, a dill dip goes fine.

Try this:

Yogurt Cucumber Sauce

2 cups plain yogurt

1/2 cucumber ,peeled, grated, drained

2 cloves garlic, crushed

juice of 1/2 lemon, about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons

salt and white pepper, to taste

pinch ground cayenne pepper

Mix them all together and serve with falafels.

^^^^ That sauce is yum! I have made a sauce very similar to it before, but I didn't use the lemon juice- bet it adds a lot! (now I have an excuse to make falafel again! ).

Tahini sauce, and none other. Thin out tahini with water, lemon juice, mint and spices until it's 'saucy.'

I make a vegan sauce like MollyCat's with sour supreme. But I skip the garlic and add dill instead. Plus a pinch of sugar to take the edge off the sourness.

Ooh, I second FR here- falafel with hot sauce is great. I also like it in hummus. Charity's tahini suggestion sounds good, too.

You could add hot sauce to the cucumber sauce too. I bet that would be really good! All in all, it's just an excuse to eat yummy falafel!

OT: My boss at work had her veg*n neice over to stay for the holidays. My boss came into work with two containers of 'weird food' as she called it and asked me if I wanted it. The weird food ended up being about 8 falafels and a package of firm tofu! I didn't have to bring dinner to work for a couple of days.

You gotta have that chilli sauce for a good falafel. Here's one, but tabasco will do.

Quote:
Hot Sauce for Falafels

1 cup Vegetable broth

6 tablespoons Tomato paste

2 teaspoons Red chili paste

1 tablespoon Fresh lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon Ground cumin

1 tablespoon Fresh parsley -- minced

1 tablespoon Cilantro -- minced

Combine all ingredients in a pot. Over a medium heat, simmer until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.

At my favourite falafel stand, they have a coriander sauce, red chilli sauce and a very spicy green sauce that I've never seen a recipe for. It's amazing.

They also have baked cauliflower, minced onion mixed with tomato sauce, pickle slices, olives, long pickled peppers, a couple of different salad mixes, including couscous and rice salads, fried eggplant slices and tahini sauce. You order a falafel, they hand it to you filled with balls, hummous and lettuce and then you spoon in anything you want on top of it all.

Maybe I'm boring but I like to take the easy way out and just use a vegan mayo.

Mmmmmmmmmm - you are making me crave falafel

I like it stuffed in pita with garlic tahini sauce, hummus, tabbouli, bean salad/chickpeas, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. Oh and pickled onions. Guess who might make a trip to the falafel kitchen for dinner????

When I was lacto ovo, my favorite on falafel was tatziki (a greek cucumber dill yoghurt you can find by sour cream in a super market)

Or hummus! (would you like some chickpeas with your chickpeas?)

Thankyou everyone for your great ideas

I had my party last night, and atleast half the people tried the falafel which was good, cause I was a little apprehensive about making it. I made the yoghurt cucumber sauce too which was very yummy

Thanks again
